  • Microsoft doesn't really have competitors in the traditional sense. Steam OS exists because they fucked up windows 8 so badly that Valve saw them as a liability to their revenue stream. Linux exists because hobbyists make it, and people use it out of preference. Apple is off doing their own thing.

Their biggest threat is shooting themselves in the foot so much that each leg is a bloody stump. I literally got pushed away from windows because they kept doing shit I didn't like, to the point I was willing to make the transfer, and eat the year or so it took to get comfortable with Linux. Linux is good, but to a majority of people it's the lesser evil at this point.

  • Multiplayer is fine, there are specific multiplayer cards that can really change up how you play. I wouldn't say it's earth shattering or anything, but it's still a good time.

  • I view art as an open communication of sorts. It can be viewed without knowledge of the person behind it, but in general the more you expose yourself to a person, the better you get to know them. Their styles, values, thought patterns, all of which get baked into the art in a fundamental level.

For that reason, I don't really think you can. You can look at their works from how you engage with them, absolutely, but you can't fully disengage yourself with the idea that someone alive made this. It dehumanises creators, turning them into content machines. You may as well get an AI to start churning out garbage.

  • Something to do with all the water when the oceans start rising.

  • That's pretty much it, instead of having everything planned out ahead of time you just kind of let it flow, growing like a garden. It helps because sometimes preplanning can be a bit restrictive, you tend to get more varied responses by garden style instead.

Winds of winter is the next book in the "a song of ice and Fire" series. It's been well over a decade since the last book. The fan consensus is that, amongst other reasons, he hasn't finished it because in the last few books he let the story grow wildly out of scope, and is having huge difficulties resolving everything in a satisfying matter. Hence my caution on the style.

  • God it frustrates me. Like I get wanting to put it in your game for release, but once it's cracked, why bother keeping it in there? All it does it eat performance and your own money to maintain it. Just let it go.

  • Garden style can work really well when for creativity, but there's part of my brain that remembers winds of winter probably isn't ever coming out, and I feel sad.

  • Literally eyeing the door rn

  • I have a story for you. I wanted to do art, I tried to do art, my parents made me do computer science. It was easier to get a job, it paid better, it was more stable. And yeah, those are all things that were true at the time. I got into computing.

Now, a decade and a bit later, I was made redundant, and the bottom fell out of the tech industry. The art industry isn't fairing much better. Which inevitable industry crash did I avoid?

Just do what your passion lies in. It doesn't matter too much exactly what, but if it gets you over the line regarding getting a degree, it's a hell of a start.

  • Ah, then yeah let's hope it's a bit better.

  • It definitely could be, my understanding is that the principle is somewhat like an intrusive thought, in that your brain is running the identification of a sexual intent, and reacting to that. Whether that's arousing to the person is somewhat secondary, but the body reacts on some level regardless.

  • If it's anything like the steam deck it's fine, if a bit stiff.

  • I'm not looking it up, but iirc there was a study done a while back where peoples genitals reacted to erotic images regardless of their sexual preferences. Something about how the brain perceives the context, e.g. you can see a naked person without erotic context and might not have any genital reaction at all.

  • Funnily enough I miss the internet. You can kind get the same experience in the right places, but it's not quite the same vibe.

  • Essentially it's a controller designed to get a decent to excellent result playing anything on steam, part of that is you need a mouse and keyboard. I've used the ones on my steam deck a bunch, and they're pretty good at most anything.
