  • My Arch install yesterday:

That's a nice Kernel you have there, it would be a shame if something happened to it.

It somehow deleted the old kernel image from the boot partition but failed to write the new one (and I didn't notice before rebooting).

I needed to rebuild the kernel via chroot from a live USB.

  • It does support it, you just have to add it to dnsmasq. I have it Setup under misc.dnsmasq_lines like so:

    address=/proxy.example.com/192.0.0.100
    local=/proxy.example.com/

Then I have my proxied service reachable under service.proxy.example.com

  • Let's not forget the biggest issue, mandatory Apps that don't work.

I know of a few Banks that require you to use their app for online banking or as 2fa for online banking. Some of these don't even work while the bootloader is unlocked

  • They know it exists, they are just very understaffed so don't have time getting more complex things set up.

At least the devs get to have Linux if they can fix their own problems, but no more new non Mac Hardware...

  • The It department told me the reason that they don't support Linux is the lack of good endpoint management software and the support overhead compared to MacOs

  • The Pi 4 is massively overpowered for a PiHole, but if you got one laying around doing nothing, go for it.

I have my PiHole running on a Pi Zero with a USB Ethernet adapter. The WebUi is a bit slow, but the actual DNS with unbound as a backend isn't any slower than on a Pi 4.

  • With the same setup I had constant issues with Variable Refresh Rate, monitor sleep and actual sleep...

Nvidia on Linux did not want to work well for me

  • Ah, printer support.

I have better experience with Linux than with Windows for printers.

But it never really is 100% reliable for some models

  • Thought so too, you compile the driver against the kernel. But I'm not sure about the exact mechanics.

I've always used the dmks Nvidia driver, so switching to the 580xx aur wasn't a problem

  • I really gotta double check on my laptop, but I am using the nvidia-580xx-dmks aur package with the latest kernel (should be 6.18) without Problems.

But then again a lot of the "normal" HW acceleration is handled by the igpu there.

  • Soweit ich weiß haben sie letztens Vulkan Darstellung kaputt gemacht, so dass es richtig schlecht damit läuft

  • You are lucky then. If you play lots of multiplayer games you are bound to encounter one that doesn't work.

Most modern Call of Duty and Battlefield games do not work for example.

According to areweanticheatyet.com only 40% of Games with Anti cheat work on Linux...

  • It's always the same for early adopters. I remember having stability problems early since I got the 5900x at release. It went away after maybe 3 bios updates.

  • Ah, I vaguely remember reading about this.

I'll just use the current one, it's not hard to swap a cooler if I notice any problems.

  • I suspect it's the CPU just because the failure mode does match others where a CPU replacement fixed the issue. My PC would just freeze when booting until I disabled global C-States. That fixed it for about 5 months and then it started happening again...

Sounds like I should be fine with the AiO, since it is mounted to the top of the case.

  • I read that this kit also has a preset for 6000, so that should be fine if the silicon can't handle 6400 in 1:1 mode.

Good point on the pcie Lanes, I'll have to do more research on that, since I will likely use all of the 4 SATA ports at some point.

I think the multi core performance is about equal, and I didn't need much of an upgrade there since the 5900x still feels more than adequate.

  • Buildapc @lemmy.world

    Upgrading from AM4 to AM5

  • Debian based distros are good, but I always had problems with the slow releases. And no idea how well that works out for GPU drivers if you plan to play new games

  • There is also Shizuku that might be utilized in der Future to install apps (Im just speculating here)

  • 99% sure that SMB and NFS doesn't support watching for file changes, so it will only be picked up at the next scheduled scan (by default every hour)
