UnfinishedProjects is an attempt to create a community directory of open-licensed creative and technical work. We believe the commons grows stronger when we contribute small amounts to many projects rather than working in isolation.

We want to create a community with a culture that is different then the fast paced, low effort reposts - and instead build a community that encourages collaboration and thoughtful interaction.

  • I'm honestly not sure how we will handle it as we grow, but for now I think that posting your project in the forums is more acceptable if you want to discuss it, but aren't sure if it's going to be openly licensed yet. As for the wiki, we will likely be more strict about the open licenses, since it is intended to be more of a collaboration space where others will contribute and adapt.

    If you want to post about your project on the forum and you think you will likely pick an open license, just mention that you don't yet have a license picked out and explain the situation.

    Like I said, as we grow - we may get more strict with this if it's taken advantage of, but if it's posted in good faith and stated clearly, I'm ok with it for now.

  • Yeah, I know a lot of people are skeptical with the name - and I get it...but part of it is the fact that we embrace the fact that a project is unfinished. The idea is that the projects are carried forward by the commons, and even if someone abandons a project, someone else might be able to pick up where you left off and carry it forward.

    I feel that the current open source and creative commons projects all exist in small bubbles - where each individual or team tries to prop up their own project(s)...the idea is to try and bring the community together and work on projects within an ecosystem, rather than in isolation. Essentially, have each individual, team, and project intertwined with the other projects within our community/ecosystem. Obviously, until we actually build a community with this type of culture - its just a pipe dream...but that is the hope and vision. :)

  • We set up a nodeBB (federated) forum built around collaboration on libre projects.https://forum.unfinishedprojects.net/

    The forum is also attached to a wiki to build and share your projects - but the wiki is obviously not federated. We hope to get a few people who are interested to help us build up our community base. We would love it if you would stop by and introduce yourself :)

  • I agree, so many people disregard Debian, but if you're not gaming and don't need to keep up with the latest things - Debian is rock solid and most of your packages you can just use flatpak. For the majority of daily users who aren't gaming, I think it's a super solid choice.

  • As for the layout - yeah it's the layout that the software nodeBB has set, and we could look into trying to customize the layout to something more intuitive. Thanks for the feedback :)

    As for the potential for abuse - you're right, of course - there will always be potential for abuse. However, the open source and creative commons community is what we are trying to align our community with, and will hopefully also contribute to building the community culture of collaboration in good spirit, without focusing so much on profit or business, but more on the collective good.

  • I think would be helpful to have a login button somewhere instead of one having to get all the way down to a topic.

    The Forum Login is in the top right of every page (if the menu is not expanded, it will simply be an icon - so I could understand how it could easily be missed):

    Login on the wiki is currently disabled (invite only) as we are currently still developing and building up the pages. But wiki login will be in the bottom left:

    Are you writing anywhere about how you are doing this? Tech stack, team members, etc..

    I don't have anything super detailed yet, but I am trying to be extremely transparent with anything, and all of that is on codeberg: https://codeberg.org/UnfinishedProjects (Currently it has wiki backup info, "projects" is our kanban for building the platforms (we did most of it on another app, but just switched over to codeberg projects, so there is only a few tasks open atm). As time goes on, hopefully we will be able to flesh this out more, as well as actually building wiki pages with more information and detail - it will likely just take some time and motivation to get it all together. Also, since you mentioned tech stack - I just want to note that these are pre-built applications, we are not building them ourselves. The forum software is using nodeBB, and the wiki is using MediaWiki.

    New project submissions, such as https://unfinishedprojects.net/wiki/Special:FormEdit/Submit_Project, should be behind login.

    It most definitely SHOULD be. The entire wiki requires login submit or edit anything. If that isn't the case, please let me know and I will try to fix it asap...but I think it should be disabled.

    Lastly, when I see this “The Libre Community” makes me think that this would be even nicer if it was for all creators

    We did think about allowing projects that were not open licensed, but it felt like there was too much room for abuse or issues. We want to prevent people from trying to use our platform to simply advertise - and instead it should be about collaboration. I think on the forum, we may end up being slightly more lax in terms of libre only projects (we will have to see how our community grows). As for the wiki, closed licensed projects could also cause legal issues that I don't want to deal with or know anything about.With that said, we do want to invite everyone, from any skillset or background (as long as you are respectful to others and the intent behind the platform). Nothing is stopping people from networking on our platform to meet others who want to start their own (closed source) projects outside our ecosystem, but projects within on our platform are intended to be contributing to the commons (open source/creative commons).

  • Wow, never knew this existed. I usually don't use gimp all that much compared to inkscape - so I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble...but this is very nice. I honestly don't know what they wouldn't pull these settings into the default gimp, even if only as an alternative skin option you can select.

    The major drawback of gimp for many people is the interface, I think. That's why blender has really taken off since it's UI/UX update.

    It would be nice if at the minimum we could have someone experienced look through our setup and ensure we are not missing something critical to properly function/be secure.

  • Exactly - I am hoping to find some smaller, close knit communities that align with our own to federate with. The goal isn't to create another instance full of news feeds and etc...but instead I want to try and build a community that is focused on valuable interactions/collaboration and working to improve and contribute to the creative commons and open source community.

  • Oh, this is quite interesting - never heard of it before. I think this could definitely work to an extent, but I am already so deep down the rabbit hole for MediaWiki. Plus, I think MediaWiki is actually a great fit for this type of community, because it is community created, and has rollbacks of edits, and the community itself is able to collaborate and contribute very easily. While it isn't in the fediverse, I think it will "essentially" be connected via the forum that is within the subdomain. The intent is for the forum and wiki to work side by side, and the forum will be the connection into the fediverse.

    Regardless though, neodb.net is really cool - thanks for sharing :) I'll definitely look into it more!
