Artist: Georgia O’Keeffe

Year: 1924

Medium: Oil on canvas

This painting portrays clouds rolling in over Lake George in upstate New York, where Georgia O’Keeffe often vacationed. Like this painting, much of O’Keeffe’s art hovers between abstraction and realistic depictions of the landscape, often in an attempt to capture the transcendent or spiritual qualities she found in nature. From the Lake No. 1 was exhibited in Alfred Stieglitz’s landmark exhibition “Seven Americans” at the Anderson Galleries in New York in 1925. Stieglitz, who was also O’Keeffe’s romantic partner, played an integral role in launching her career in 1917 when he put on her first one-person show at his gallery 291. The pair married in 1924.
