The main reason I am not buying into electric vehicles is the state of reliability and repairability and the immense black box which those vehicles are nowadays. What I would like to see is pretty much exactly that prototype as a commercially available and street legal product. Where everything can be modified and improved or repaired by anyone. Just like in the "good old days"...
That is not the students' task I guess.
That should and will be done by the industry. The concept could possibly be adapted to an existing electric car platform (chassis, frame,...).
My guess is that some company will buy them out and bury the plans.
iPod 5th with SSD is a good choice. Aim for 64MB RAM.
iRiver H3xx series was the peak portable device, but that's long ago.
Also check the rockbox device list:

My personal experience is that I feel that as an overlay in OSMAnd it is not as up to date in realtime terms as the traffic layer in gmaps. I might be wrong though, I don't use it as much.
Rant Ende
Offtopic:
Is it possible to "avoid road" upon tapping a location? OsmAnd offers this feature, in case you are confronted with a road block or construction site. CoMaps does not it seems. I can not correct routing live without this function.
Geocoding converters are crucial for everyday comfort, thanks promitheas.
There is also osm2gmaps to convert from OSMAnd to gmaps/amaps:

And Adresilo Android app to query gmaps & co. through a proxy handler and then share to OSMAnd (paid per query). https://git.sr.ht/~amolith/adresilo
To put GPS together with passive or unidirectional technologies is correct in isolated view, but effectively misleading.
All phones nowadays use assisted GPS (A-GPS / SUPL). That makes it an active!
