    With exactly one exception: Steam via flatpak because that's the single package left that would need 32bit libraries from multilib-repo since Wine finally left those dependencies behind.

  • Those at least started with Windows7 back then. I have a laptop here that still has that "Windows XP ready" sticker. And a PC from -as mentioned- pre-UEFI times with some hybrid system (basically BIOS with 64bit compatibility) that started originally with a classic MBR partitioned disk.

    But hey... that's still nothing in terms of Linux support. Recent kernels still support (but are soon to drop) 486-architecture.

  • I will be so happy when the last of my ancient devices finally died and I don't have to bother anymore with BIOS/MBR, BIOS/GPT and GrUB in general, just handy Unified Kernel Images getting booted directly everywhere...

  • I don't think there is a better "default" because the default has to be the general setting everyone can live with. But that of course also means it's not particularly good for any use case.

    In general desktop users prefer lower values for snappy behavior when switching thorugh different apps (~10 often recommended). People mainly focusing on preformance of the primary running app prefer higher values (which may, depending on setup) include gamers.

    Also there is zram/zswap now (basically compressed swap in memory instead of on disk) which is faster than tradittional swap.

    But in the end you can only try out values and watch your systems behavior or run benchmarks to find the proper value for you personally,

    And WHIP is probably unneccessarily complicated anyway.

    I was able to stream the output of my V4L2loopback-device (the virtual camera created with OBS' output) to a browser accessing localhost:

    <port>

    with Motion without any setup other than creating a single-line config file defining the port...

  • Teamspeak and Mumble (which I prefer because it's free and open-source... also already vastly superior sound quality years ago when Teamspeak was stil the common option most peope used) are indeed "separate applications" doing only one of the jobs... voice communication in this case.

  • Discord alternatives are complicated, because Discord is conceptual bullshit. It started as voice communication, yet became popular for the text communication.

    So you won't find a good replacement (unless something new created in particular to mimic discord), because the things it now provides are better handled by seperate applications.

    PS: OBS should already work on it's own, without a dedicated webserver on your side. Basically every media program (also browser) should be able to handle streams

    OBS' WHIP (WebRTC-HTTP Ingestion) support should allow direct connection to web browsers.

  • Fun fact: Contrary to popular believe you are better off using a channel already used by a strong signal than a weak one. Your router will be better at filtering which packets do not belong to your wifi when the signal is strong and clear.

  • Jein... die CSU ist grundsätzlich gegen Fortschritt und seit einigen Jahren dank persönlicher Vendetta von Söder auch auf striktem Anti-Grüne Kurs.

    Die Freien Wähler aber sind komisch. Die sind längst nicht so konservativ und auch nicht so populistisch wie man meinen möchte. Aiwanger ist da eher die traurige Ausnahme und auch der muss sich halt einigermaßen nach der Partei richten. Und da kommt teilweise 'ne interessante Mischung bei raus: Auf der einen Seite hast du die typischen C*U Talking Points, auf der anderen Seite Forderungen nach besserem ÖPNV and mehr Umweltschutz. Auf der einen Seite steht die typisch konservative Landwirtschaftförderung (inklusive populistischem Ruf nach unbeschränkter Tierhaltung), auf der anderen Seite Reformideen zur Verbesserung der Qualität, mehr Lieferkettentransparenz, Stärkung regionalen Absatzes inklusive Direktvermarktung für kleine Betriebe.

    Und den Ausstieg aus fossilen Brennstoffen, Ausbau erneuerbarer Energie, sowie Bayern zum Standort for Wasserstoffproduktion machen, haben die schon lange im Programm; quasi als als klassischer Heimat- und Umweltschutzpunkt, den man bei "Konservativen" eigentlich erwarten würde, aber so oft vermisst.

    Genauso wie die im Gegensatz zu ihrem Koalitionspartner die Sache mit der Kinderfreundlichkeit verstanden haben, und als primäre Lösung für mehr Familien und Kinder für bessere Kinderbetreuung, flexiblere Arbeitszeiten und jede Menge zusätzlicher Beratungsmöglichkeiten und Unterstützung in Erziehungsfragen eintreten, ebenso wie für diverse konkrete Programme, um die Zahl der Erzieher stark zu erhöhen (z.B. einen beinah 4-stelligen Zusatzbetrag während der Ausbildung monatlich, der nicht zurückgezahlt werden muss).

  • Because the default is set for healthy performance. But users in actual reality don't care for raw performance but want responsive systems. If you are opening a browser to pass time while some longer process runs in the background, you are less interested in that background process being done 10% faster than in your browser not being sluggish.

    PS: Sidenote... Many recommendations are based on older kernels. Since 5.8 swappiness is not measured from 0 to 100, but 0 to 200. So the 60 default is already half of what it was many years ago.

    Outright nazis, a supposed center-right (and highly corrupt) party copying every nazi talking point and a supposed center-left (and not caring about anything but gifts for pensioneers) party agreeing to every insanity as long as they get a position in government, too, combine to an easy 2/3 majority in polls (did I mention age bracket 55+ having a majority in elections?^^), which translates into an even bigger majority in seats.

    We have stopped doing actual politics at all as it's completely drowned out by culture war 24/7.

    They are so "progressive" that they advocate for burning more fossil fuels right now as renewables are obviosuly not working, Germany is -unlike the Nordics- much too cold for heat pumps, and also much too big for electric mobility with its limited range as everyone is obviously driving a few thousand kilometers daily...

    No, that's barely more than a slight exaggeration of their regular talking points.
