    I get that in the world we live in, many people are going to be primed to react harshly to "monitoring" wrapped in language about how it will help us. But considering the source, the public context, and the motivations involved, nah.

  • Debian + KDE Plasma got me to switch over from Mint. It just feels right.

    There have been a LOT of updates recently though. Normally I update pretty often because part of the reason for using Debian is my expectation that an update has been pretty thoroughly vetted before it gets pushed out to stable, and that stability/reliability is one of the priorities of the distro.

    I just hope that holds true, and that if LLMs are involved it's those cases where they stumble upon an obscure security flaw that humans confirm.

    At multiple appointments I've intentionally made humorous references to stupid health/rfk stuff from the news. He stays totally professional, but he is also obviously relieved that he can safely roll his eyes and let off some steam about the level of stupid in the world.

  • Back 'round the turn of the century I had an ancient car with a dying starter.

    It was a manual, so sure I could start it on a hill. But sometimes you just have to whack the starter itself and it will work!

    I think I went months with a straight wooden axe/sledgehammer handle in the trunk as my starter starter until I replaced it.
