  • I can: the solution to homelessness is a combination of mental health ed in schools, free & non-judgemental mental health support (incl. medication), free addiction recovery programs, free food, job & community support, and free housing.

    If you just provide free housing, there will be a significant proportion of people who would not be able to fully benefit from it due to mental health issues, addictions, and lack of purpose in life.

  • We need to get rid of cars, the sooner the better. Whether self-driving, electric, or a combination of those, they are the worst transportation method for most use-cases. Cars are only used as much as they currently are, because they are the most profitable for the capitalist and seem immediately convenient for the user, resulting in a double tragedy-of-commons situation.

    Being paid by a car company, regurgitating their opinions, and not being clear enough about the whole situation, all while being a presumably trusted science presenter is unethical.

  • The whole thing seemed to be engineered for drama, and the "results" that most people got out of it are an exceptionally clickbaity oversimplification of what's going on. It's like that numberphile thing with 1 + 2 + 3 + ...

    It's more complicated than the lightbulb just "turning on faster than the electric field could travel through the wire", in fact (depending on the exact circumstances) the initial current would be tiny, probably not enough to meaningfully "light" the lightbulb, and only after the light-speed delay would it ramp up to full-brightness.

    Electric field obviously travels in all directions, but the electrons which produce fluctuations in the electric field, and propagate those fluctuations through mutual interactions, are constrained to the wire. Hence unless your wires are so close together as to basically be connected to each other, air significantly attenuates the electric field wave propagation.     I still watch his videos sometimes because it can be quite entertaining/thought-provoking, but for the past 5-7 years a lot of them are clickbaity sponsored stuff, and you really need to mentally skip a lot of bullshit to get to the nugget of value.

  • I know I'm a bit different because I usually enjoy cooking, but in my experience there's no way to get around experimenting for yourself and building up the "mental image" of how much stuff you have to mix together for everything to work well. Every time I tried following an online recipe it came out wrong in one way or another and I had to learn how adjust for the ingredients and even cookware I have available.

    As for your question: for pancakes, I'd say soy milk is my choice, maybe add a bit of extra vegetable oil compared to the regular recipe. If you're into coconut flavor, then coconut milk would be ideal in terms of texture, but it will overpower everything else taste-wise. Almond milk will probably taste the best but the texture is usually quite dry.

  • Nah, honestly, I think stuffing an entire computer inside a monitor and relying on it to generate/show content is a bad idea no matter what software it runs. A dumb TV + a small computing dongle requires only a tiny fraction more labor to produce than a smart TV, but it's so much easier to upgrade in the future if you decide you need faster boot times or wanna game on the TV, etc. And if the TV breaks before the dongle does, you can also buy a new TV and keep all your settings/media without transferring anything.

  • Ah, it's not the best for cases like that, especially if you need to make different layouts all the time. You can get it to do anything with enough packages and positioning hints, but at some point it becomes too much of a chore. If you just need a dozen of layouts and then fill them out with different content, it's doable.

  • I haven't seen any WYSIWYG document editors that are any good. Markdown/Org for simpler stuff, LATEX for more complicated stuff, or mix them together with pandoc.

  • Oh, I forgot to mention once thing: the chunks need to be fine (<5 mm diameter). I usually buy bigger chunks, use them up in other dishes, and at the end there's a bunch of what I call "soy sand" which I use for these "meatballs".

  • I do agree with you that most likely he did it. But that doesn't necessarily make him guilty. Everyone in the jury pool needs to understand that simple fact, the guilty/not guilty verdict is ultimately decided by the jury and not by the facts nor the law.

I mean, there is a capitalist aspect to it (immigrants are often cheap labor) but also this should help them gain job protection and minimum wages and such, at least preventing overexploitation. Overall I think it's a long-term win both for the people of Spain and the immigrants.

  • Abstraction, when used well, is actually a tool that produces more simple code in the long run. It separates different concerns into different pieces of code, makes code readable by extracting common logic and giving it a recognizable name, and reduces boilerplate.

    That said, OOP-style inheritance-based abstractions, while useful in some cases, quite often lead people down the complete opposite path - mushing together unrelated logic and then making call sites difficult to understand with a lot of hidden state that has to be kept in mind.

  • The US still does have an OK "public broadcaster" - PBS (even though it's mostly not known for "news"). It wasn't run by Fox News hosts either, it produced some fairly progressive or at least pro-scientific content. However it is getting destroyed right now, precisely because it doesn't fit the agenda of the current government.

    The only solution to this is aligning the government with the people. I'm afraid revolution is the only way to do this (although there is a tiny sliver of hope that it can be resolved without too much violence). Until then ad-"supported" news won't save you, because they are all fundamentally capitalist. Iskra didn't have ads in it.

  • If you can get fine textured soy (a.k.a "soy chunks"/"soy meat") for cheap where you are, it's easy enough to make balls similar to this.

    Soak chunks in hot water for 20-30 minutes (they need to be really soft), squeeze out water with your hands. Add spices to taste, mix in wheat flour and potato starch (I don't know the exact ratio, but there should be more flour than starch) until it gets to a consistency where you can roll it up into a ball. Deep-fry in some oil. Add tomato sauce and simmer until it thickens. Serve on pasta.
