  • To be honest pedestrian bridges suck. Lots of people just can't use them (mobility issues/parents with strollers/cyclists/...), they add a non-insignificant climb and descent to your journey, and they look depressing. They should only be a last resort, e.g. for highway crossings.

    The real (short-term) solution is to narrow the stroad to just one lane in each direction (which makes room for cycle lanes or light rail), and add regular crossings (or at least reasonably timed traffic lights). The long-term solution is to get rid of personal cars in urban areas altogether.

  • I don't mean actual product advertisements like what Trump is doing, but every single US president actively endorsed and defended the right of capitalists to steal surplus value, all while being paid by those same capitalists, which I think absolutely counts as shilling.

    The democrats are at least sometimes trying/pretending to make profit extraction sustainable with environmental protection and labor laws that are designed to prevent actual labor organizing. They also undoubtedly have some other benefits like minority rights and slightly more predictable policy choices. If I were in the US, I'd probably vote for dems in every election as a matter of harm reduction. But I also understand dems won't save US from corporatism/fascism, because they are by design servants of the capitalist class.

  • I'm not really addicted to my phone. Most of the day I don't even know where it is. I am however a bit addicted to my laptop/desktop, but that's easier to avoid since it's location-dependent — I usually go on daily walks/jogs. Since there's also some external stimuli (people, weather, dogs, etc) it's much easier to keep the internet off my mind entirely.

    If it's safe to do so, going on walks without the phone could be a good way to start a habit like this, IMO.

  • Yep, the ln/exp immediately made me think about the multiplication/addition thing. I could also get 0 easily: eml(1, eml(eml(1, 1), 1)) (basically e - ln(e^e)), and it's trivial to just get the exponential: exp(x) = eml(x, 1)

    What I didn't think about is that we could do some tricks with infinities :)

    • infinitiy ∞ = eml(1, 0)
    • negative infinity -∞ = eml(1, ∞)
    • allows us to get the negative logarithm: neg_ln(x) = eml(-∞, x)
    • from which it's easy to get negation neg(x) = neg_ln(exp(x))
    • regular logarithm ln(x) = neg(neg_ln(x))
    • then trivial subtraction x - y = eml(ln(x), exp(y))
    • and finally addition x + y = x - neg(y)

    That's so cool!

    Edit to add: Apparently this is multiplication…

    Yep, multiplication is easy when you have the above, it's basically x × y = exp(ln(x) + ln(y))

    As far as I can tell just following through with substitutions leads to exactly the same expression as the one in the image

    Actually their expression is different, I'm not sure exactly how they got to it... it seems they pretty much brute-forced all possible trees in search of the right one...

    Actually, one of main applications for batteries in the near-to-medium future is gonna be grid storage to supplement the explosive growth of renewables, and home backups to make the grid more distributed and replace diesel/gas generators during blackouts. For those purposes you don't really care about the size, really don't care about the weight, and a cheaper, more stable, less fire-prone chemistry suddenly becomes very appealing.

    I agree with you that lithium is not going anywhere for a while, it's the best fit for many applications like EVs, drones, etc. But I wouldn't be surprised if its share in the battery market drops significantly over the next 10-15 years.

  • Many labor movements throughout history started out due to advances in automation resulting in unemployment and rising inequality. This time around there's also a huge cost of living crisis too, so things are lining up (you might hear "contradictions are sharpening" in marxist circles). If anything I'd have expected violence to start sooner and be more widespread, if someone gets laid off due to AI in this job market they literally have nothing to lose at this point.

  • It's been happening for a good 20 years already. Do you think US drone strikes were all military targets? Do you think both russia and ukraine didn't absolutely dronefuck multiple population centers? Do you think israel didn't use drones to carry out its genocides? There are probably tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of dead civilians due to drone strikes already.
