  • No, but regular calls (via 3G networks) work-ish; the only problem is that you can't switch the audio output, i.e. hands-free calls are not a thing.

  • You mean NixOS? Well, it's definitely not as polished as pmOS, but most things do work. My gf is using it as an LTE-enabled music player, and I'm using it to ssh into my servers when I'm out and about.

    It required some hackery to get GPS and the modem to work, but then it's mostly similar to pmOS. I need to find some time to sit down, clean up my config and publish it somewhere, but life's main quest line is preventing any side projects rn.

    If you can get it for not too much money, I'd definitely spring for it. Even if you find it doesn't suit your daily needs (it probably doesn't just yet), it will at least be a fun toy for playing with mobile linux.

  • Both cars I've bought and sold in Georgia (the country in the Caucasus) were done with cash USD. This is just how the car market works there. From my experience the situation is similar in Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt (maybe not as common), etc...

    It is called US Dollar for a reason.

  • I mean, that's just false. In a lot of countries with weak or unstable local currencies, big purchases like vehicles and real estate (sometimes even rent) are often done in USD to make sure the money keeps (most of) its value until you want to spend it again. I've seen it both in Africa and Asia. I've had to handle USD bills a lot even though I've never even stepped foot in the Americas.

    The other video was on some other channel, I can't find it right now. I don't remember the exact quote but the gist was "Linux is not a serious or usable OS", he just dismissed it outright. I'm generally ok with people shitting on Linux, but I remember that was particularly annoying and dismissive of both developers and users, especially so since he's a techy person.

    He might have changed his stance since, but I've not been keeping up so I don't know 🤷

Kids who used calculators to cheat with basic arithmetic will often struggle with learning more advanced concepts later on because they didn't get a "feel" for numbers, and I strongly suspect the same will happen with kids who start using LLMs before they know how research works.

    It is totally appropriate to use calculators when you already have an intuition for small numbers, and in just the same way students should learn to use LLMs, but only when they already know how to write and think and research stuff. Curriculum needs to adapt to this quickly, otherwise we will end up with a generation that outsources all their thinking to techbros.
