  • I just finished Dark Souls III. Beat Gael in 5 attempts I think, which I was pretty proud of. Still haven’t killed Midir yet but I’m putting that on hold for a while. I just started a playthrough of Pokémon Emerald with my wife, who has never played a Pokémon game before but grew up with the trading cards and the show. I was the opposite, growing up with the games but never got much into the cards or show. We’ve got a little one on the way so we might introduce him/her to Pokémon when they’re old enough, so she wants to have an understanding of it first

  • The letters are lined up in a queue

  • !newcommunities@lemmy.world is a great place to discover new communities. As for big ones that already exist I’m sure there’s probably a list of big communities out there somewhere, otherwise browsing by All > Top 6 Hours or All > Hot will give you a good mix of everything. Then you can add communities you like from there

Edit: also lots of communities will shout out other communities in their sidebars. Check those too

  • (Soul)Silver for nostalgia, Emerald for favourite to replay

  • I like this way of doing it. For me:

Nostalgia and all-time enjoyment, probably Pokémon Gen 2 / Remakes (Silver / Gold / Crystal / SoulSilver / HeartGold). I consider them all one game of different “flavours”. If I had to choose one I’d probably go with SoulSilver. The remakes added some much needed modern conveniences, and having your Pokémon follow you around in the overworld was awesome.

Pure “this game is so good”, probably Elden Ring. Before the DLC I’d probably go with Dark Souls III because of Gael and Friede, but Shadow of the Erdtree blew me away.

Most hours played, Skyrim at over 5,000. HITMAN is in second place at a bit over 1,300.

  • I’ve got two. A void and (I think) a blue point.

The void is Apollo, but his nickname is “what is that in your mouth”

The blue point is Islay, but her nickname is “how the fuck did you get the toilet paper again”

  • That’s a very good question

I had a lot of free time in 2016-2018 ish

  • My baby being born. (S)he is due in September. Can’t wait

  • Good to know. I played a little bit of it at launch and thought it was pretty cool (I didn’t notice many bugs when I played), but never bought it. I know it’s supposed to be much better now and I’ve heard good things about the DLC too. Maybe I will hit that buy button

  • I’m in the same boat. Got it in the cart, unsure if I’ll hit buy

  • Good to know. I’ve got a bottle of the CC 100% rye that I bought recently, first time trying that one. I’ve only had it neat, maybe I’ll do an old fashioned next time

  • What’s been your favourite Canadian whisky for an old fashioned? I normally have my whisky neat but I enjoy the occasional cocktail

  • My first souls game was DS3 too. The tutorial boss probably killed me more than any other boss in that game, with one exception near the end. I really struggled with it. I finally did see that game to the end though, and eventually got really into the rest of the FromSoftware games too. When I revisited DS3 a few years ago and did a new playthrough, I was amazed how easy the tutorial boss felt. It was crazy. That’s the fun part of Dark Souls, you get so much better at the game by the end and when you go back to replay you realize just how far you came. Old challenges are like a walk in the park.

  • I look forward to reading about it next week

  • I played that one recently. I thought it was a lot of fun

  • I always look forward to reading your posts.

I never got much into FIFA, I’m more of a hockey fan, but your comment makes me want to go back and revisit the old NHL games. I’ve got most of them from that era, on the original Xbox.

  • It’s been a little bit since I’ve played any games (life just got busy), but I finally found time to sink some real time into replaying Dark Souls III again. I’m not a pro player and definitely not a speedrunner but I’m about 25 hours into this playthrough (having to kill every boss but no other restrictions or rules), and I’m on Gael. Just need to kill him and Midir and I’m done, I’m pretty happy with how it’s gone. Twin princes took 5 tries, Nameless King and Friede took 2 tries, and I think every other boss was a first try this time which felt pretty awesome. I’m hoping I can do a no death run next time

  • Any time I do a magic build I tend to go for conjuring, I find it the most fun. That and levelling up the alteration tree as quickly as possible, there’s some good perks in there. I’ve never done pure necromancy before though. It sounds fun, maybe the next time I go back to Skyrim for a while I’ll try that build
