  • As started in other comments, TrueNAS is staying open source, only the build system is going closed source because some company was ripping them off and removing license. But the OS system itself can't go closed source because of the gpl license.

So no need to move away if you like it.

  • And Roblox to no Roblox.

  • Just FYI both ente and immich are US based, open source and both can be selfhosted. I tried both and they are both good.

  • I bough old FUJITSU Desktop (ESPRIMO D757/E90+) its ~2017 has 4 pcie. I bough cheap 3 ethernet NICs and 1 wi-fi on a maketplace/bazar and installed openWRT. Actually I installed proxmox and openWRT in a VM so that I can use that computer for other networking stuff like AdGuard, Tailscale, etc... Btw if you do this be careful which wifi you buy, not everything is easy to setup on OpenWRT.

  • You might wanna check out storj.

  • That would be awesome! Anyway good luck and have fun developing it, it's interesting project 😊

  • You might want to check Ente Auth. Not sure how many checkboxes it ticks for you but I know people are quite happy with it.

  • Nice, and interesting. I would reconsider the name though. Its hitting way too close to google. I know that was the intention, but I think you will be in google's shadow because of it.

  • Fedora just works for me in every case except NAS where I have TrueNAS, so Fedora it is and I installed it even to couple of people and they also like it.

  • I will teach you a trick. Login with e.g. github. Create a tailnet. Create new user invite link, use it yourself - you can setup login with passkey to this second user. Promote to admin. Leave with your github user. Voila you have an account and tailnet with only passkey, no big brother oauth or anything.

  • Good tip, I was looking for something like this, thanks! By looking I mean I wanted it but procrastinated to search for it 😀

  • I think browser do not have to be european as long as it is opensource, so Firefox, Librewolf, Brave, Mullvad (swedish) are all great options. As search ecosia worked well for me but I didn't find a way too see their random ads (to support them) with my protections, so I felt like I should not use them. Duck duck go works for me best, I made my piece with that.

  • Btw vivaldi is not fully open source

  • Exactly what I came here to say, paperless app already have a scanner no need to fiddle with file sync and stuff 😊

  • Don't get me wrong, I totally get it and that is not the issue, I just didn't feel I should trust them, but as I said, I will look at them again :)

  • I was looking at iodé several times in the past and I don't know why but it doesn't click with me. Maybe I will check it out again, but I somehow don't trust it 😀 Maybe its the way they present themselves, if you look at the pages it looks like some company that is just trying to sell me stuff 😀 (well they actually do, one of the first things is "buy an iodé phone").

  • Whatever you do, just avoid any coatings, they say its non toxic only to find out years later they were wrong (sometimes intentionally), what you want to use is high grade stainless steel or cast iron. Only "coating" that is okay is enamel (like Le Creuset pots have), you have that on your teeth as well. Disadvantage of these above is you have to learn to use it. They need to be warmed up slowly which can be annoying sometimes, but on the other hand you have non-toxic pots that lasts for life.

  • I used CalyxOS on Fairphone (still waiting for the new one) and that was a good experience. I had completely degoogled main profile and then work profile with microG for things that doesn't really work without google services or for apps that I simply needed but didn't want running all the time. And the work profile was off most of the time. It was a good balance for me. Now I am waiting and using LineageOS, but will jump on the CalyxOS bandwagon once they are back. Also prior to CalyxOS I waited for any ROM, I had just pure FairphoneOS (just an android) and honestly, Fairphone should do something about their software because there were a lots of bugs, some were not solved for a long time and when custom ROMs became available, they were better tuned than the FairphoneOS. I mean seriously, good hardware bad software...

  • I would look into PiHole vs AdGuard home. Lots of people are locked in on PiHole, but they never tried the other and AdGuard is currently more user friendly and easier to use than PiHole. Not starting a flame war here, everyone will have different view, just look at PiHole vs Adguard home and make your own decision (or try both).

  • I have about 15 trueNAS apps only 2 of them are custom (endurain and molly socket). They are containers but very low effort handled mostly by the system. I also have 3 LXC. And 2 VMs (home assistant and openWRT). I spend only few minutes a week on maintenance. And then I tinker for several hours a week, testing new apps or enhancing current ones configs.
