  • In high school (~1995) I used to work in light construction/carpentry, and I was ravenous on a normal day, so work days I would eat huge amounts - on payday I would go to McDonald's and order a Big Mac meal and a happy meal -- both for me. (It probably would've been more cost effective to buy two adult meals, but the first time I did it the cute girl at the register said something about how I seemed like a nice dad ... I should've just asked her out, rather than keeping up a bizarre charade for no reason -- I was tan and fit from working outside all the time, I should've had more confidence, but I was also undiagnosed autistic too, so, well, that kind of explains that.)

    Anyway, the Big Mac meal was $2.99 united states dollerydoos, and I was making $7/hr. The price doubled in the 10 years between us... but wages stayed about the same.

  • I love you all very much but just please be aware that "the floor" is literally where the files are supposed to go, according to the spec. I don't like it, you don't like it, nobody likes it. But that's why it's happening.

    User specific configuration files for applications are stored in the user's home directory in a file that starts with the '.' character (a "dot file"). If an application needs to create more than one dot file then they should be placed in a subdirectory with a name starting with a '.' character, (a "dot directory"). In this case the configuration files should not start with the '.' character.

  • Disagree. The hostility expresses frustration and indicates recognition of a long term pattern, and emphasizes the gravity of Torvalds's observation.

    Don't get me wrong, I'm not pro-abuse -- while the hostility does contribute to the content, that doesn't mean it will have the desired effect. Some people get a fire lit under them when they experience that kind of feedback; others get defensive or heated or hurt, and those people are NOT motivated effectively -- and it can cause lasting harm.

    The key of it is: group B will not learn and grow from this approach; they'll learn and grow from a more cool headed approach. Group A, however, will grow from either approach. Therefore, the cool headed approach is preferable.

  • If you try to get any supervisory position in the federal government, they do a thorough background check, including checking on your debts. It's important to know whether someone at any level of management is susceptible to pressure or bribery. This goes for a LOT of non-management federal positions, too.

    But the president? No, we'll just trust him. What's a political candidate going to do, get up on a stage and lie?? Don't be ridiculous.

  • Even if Trump got the maximum sentence for all of his crimes, he wouldn't live another 5 years. (I don't mean to imply he'd be Epstein'd, or even Chauvin'd -- though i guess that's possible -- I just mean he's old, fat, eats unhealthily -- I can't think of a softer, weaker person. And "dying of old age" happens a lot younger when you're under a lot of stress.)

  • I'm in the USA and we've been able to file our federal taxes for free online for like a decade, I'm not sure what these people are talking about. What's new here is that this is the IRS's official tool.

    Previously we had to use an outside service -- but it was -- and still is -- free for normal people/people with normal taxes (eg I have 3 kids and a mortgage and I use it every year). State taxes are another story -- that's usually about $20. And that probably hasn't changed; state taxes have nothing to do with our IRS.
