  • Around 2004 we had some people over for a card game night. We were all sitting on our house's big terrace, where we had also put this type of lamp. The terrace was open to the outside and the lamp attracted a large amount of bugs, which would burn and start to smell, the same smell you are remembering.

To stop this from happening, my brother decided to put a kind of glass plate on top of the lamp as a cover. Initially this worked great and the smell was gone.

10 minutes later, the glass had gotten so hot that it exploded violently, shooting shards of glass all across the terrace. It was a lesson learned.

  • and "killing the baby", you mean like later in life to eat?

At least in the Netherlands, the species of dairy cows are focused on dairy. If a bull is born it is raised for about half a year, then slaughtered and most often the meat is exported since calf meat isn't popular here.

At that point they are basically still babies, or at least the meat is called "calf meat".

  • I used 'reader mode', or whatever it's called, on Firefox and that worked well.

  • But your lifestyle does impact how likely it is you die from covid. Poorer Trump voters are probably more likely to have a relatively unhealthy lifestyle; maybe more likely to smoke, perhaps less likely to do exercise, perhaps older? And I'm fairly certain that Republican voters are less likely to be vaccinated against covid.

Not sure what your point was exactly, but wanted to point out people absolutely did not die at the same rate across the board and political affiliation (and therefore the likelihood of being vaccinated) could definitely be a factor.

  • I live in the Netherlands and I buy fresh produce four or five times a week. Freshness wise it depends on the fruit or vegetable. I wouldn't say most things only last two days but it's not like it's gonna last ages, especially after it's been opened/started.

  • Haha nice. In Dutch you say you're gonna "wash the piglet"

  • Have you set up anything else since posting this? Also curious about it. I haven't come across any generated subtitles (I think), but had some problems after updating Kodi and the add-on no longer working.

  • I understand most people here don't care much about Henderson as a football player anymore and rather about his actions off the pitch, but as an Ajax fan this is big news.

The squad is a mess and at least on paper Henderson is perfect. Great addition to a very young and often invisible midfield as well as an experienced player who could be a terrific influence on a group lacking true leaders and role models.

Honestly though I don't really know him and am just repeating what I've read. I realized the other day I have confused him with James Milner in the past.

I'm hoping Henderson will be a big success of course, looking forward to seeing him.

  • Jose is not happy

  • It is probably a politically popular move in South Africa and especially considering the many problems South Africa is facing I understand your skepticism. However, it also makes historical sense SA does this.

Israel was one of the very few countries that continued its relationship with South Africa during apartheid. Israel would buy raw materials and South Africa weapons as well as technologies like nuclear. It's the reason why South Africa actually had nuclear weapons for a while and still have nuclear energy (pretty sure still the only African country). Israel also helped them make petrol for vehicles out of coal, which sounds insane but was a way to seal with the sanctions against South Africa that prevented them from importing oil. The apartheid regime undoubtedly lasted longer because of Israel, and South Africans haven't forgotten this.

The support for Palestine is widespread in South Africa because of this as well as the parallels between the apartheid regime and the Israeli government.

So yeah, it makes political sense for SA to take Israel to court like this, but I honestly think a big reason for it is historical and showing genuine support for Palestine.

  • Physical buttons in cars

My induction hob, my extractor fan, a light above the countertop... All of these things just in my kitchen don't have physical buttons and I hate it. Physical buttons are so easy to use and in so many ways superior to these "touch" buttons.

  • Yeah that's right. In fact I'm gonna head over to my home gym now to recreate this OK Go music video with my siblings.

  • Adiós

  • What's with the down votes? I liked the video, it was very extensive and I think showed a more fair representation of Montreal than apparently many other videos.

  • Headline writers are the worst, they so often misrepresent the article. I don't mean you OP, but in this case a headline writer at CNN (the actual author of the article most likely did not write the headline). From the article:

"...the ultimate conclusion that GM Niemann had not made himself guilty of over-the-board cheating" and "there was no “statistical evidence to support GM Niemann cheating in over the-board games”".

The headline implies they found he didn't cheat, whereas it should probably say they didn't find (enough) evidence he cheated. It's a subtle difference, but with big implications.

Niemann is a scumbag. Sure he's innocent until proven guilty, but he's already been proven to be a cheater and a liar.

  • Scary times for Argentina

  • This is good news. Not because the super league is a food idea, but UEFA should definitely not have a monopoly on football in Europe.

UEFA has created a system that is inherently unfair and functions purely to make money. In practice it means that a group of extremely wealthy and popular clubs from big countries are made to play as many games as possible while UEFA and the owners of those clubs make obscene amounts of money. The super league is an idea by some clubs so keep even more money, but UEFA is essentially doing the same just with slightly more clubs.

For the vast majority of clubs, fans, and let's not forget players, this system does not work. The problem is that UEFA and large clubs have a lot of power, influence and money.

Fuck UEFA so hard. I hope the whole organization can be replaced by something more equal and equitable. The super league isn't the answer to the problems of modern football, but UEFA isn't either.
