  • I suppose there's a big markup to account for what they'll end up throwing out, and then the high price is part of why there's so much unsold and needing to be disposed of.

  • Like I tell my mom, you asked if you could hug me but you didn't say anything about me hugging you back.

  • Yeah, but playing a physical copy of a game would be a fairer comparison to older systems.

  • The case in the tweet wasn't a hardware problem. Apparently the person's PSN account had gotten deleted during their 10+ years of not using it, and downloaded games attached to the account didn't work any more.

  • Isn't there only a week left until it's too late for a special election? If the Republicans are covering up his death they're not going to give in when they're so close.

  • Isn't it voting for Republicans that leads to that situation? They're the ones pushing for people to use the bathroom that matches what they were assigned at birth, and that's how you get a trans woman in the men's room.

  • Last time I got laid off I got the email that I was being laid off three hours before my call with HR. Headquarters was on Eastern Time, so the layoff emails went out around 9am ET, but I was on a team that was mostly on Pacific Time so my call was after 9am PT. And I'm on Atlantic, so this was 10am and 1pm, and I was off that day. The clueless HR person offered me a moment to collect myself at the start of the call, as if I hadn't already had plenty of time for that. Just one big annoyance.

  • I already had it set, and so far my LG monitor hasn't caused an LG software to be installed. But I'm on Windows 10 and I guess there's a chance this software is only for 11.

  • From the comments on the article:

    • Open SettingsSystemAboutAdvanced system settingsHardware tabDevice Installation Settings.
    • Select No to Automatically download manufacturer apps and icons.
  • Capital expenditures are for things that are expected to last a long time, like buildings and vehicles, so I guess the accounting rules around them are meant to allow the costs to be realized over a similarly long time. The idea is probably that companies would be less likely to invest in capital if it meant taking a big hit all at once. But I'm not an accountant.

  • I think it's "Future Imperfect" from season 4.

  • How can something be profitable, but also have negative cash flow?

It's been about thirty years since I took an accounting class, but I think capital expenditures like this AI spending are amortized (deferred?) over several years and don't fully count towards present expenses. So the chunk that counts for this quarter/year can still be small enough to make the company profitable (income > expenses). Free cash flow I would guess is money that came in minus money actually spent, so something like a $1m capital expenditure might count as $100k for this year's expenses but the full $1m for calculating cash flow.

  • What we need to worry about are the cuts governments will use the deficits to justify, and the fossil fuel-based plans for generating more revenue.

  • If Pike's fate were truly sealed his future self wouldn't have needed to come back and tell him changing it was going to go badly for the Federation.

  • I don't think there was anything that showed they couldn't change the past; Pike just made the right choice to avoid changing it. If they tried to shoot down the missile and something went wrong, that I would maybe take as a sign the past is fixed.

  • The clock starts in August, so the 100% tariffs will start in time for the next presidential election. Is Trump trying to screw over the next Republican candidate?

  • lol

  • They're for, uh, making sure skintones look right.

  • Leaving the call with Carney, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said point blank that withholding energy is "not going to happen."

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe has also flatly rejected the idea of using potash and energy as a leverage point and Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette said she's "not there."

Withholding the things the US needs badly enough to exclude from tariffs is exactly what we should do.
