  • A nuke sub operating there for a couple of months is still better than a DE that leaves after a week (presuming it can reach that far at all).

  • We deploy our subs for blue water not just littoral use. They patrol up as far as the South China Sea. Nukes allow us the stay on station for much longer than DEs.

  • Does it still count as drunk texting if you haven't been sober since the Bush presidency?

  • The only difference between the entertainment industry and the porn industry, is that in the porn industry the talent know they're going to get screwed.

  • Breakfast Club. I saw it in the 80s, and loved it, but thought I'd never watch it again. I put it on again during COVID and while it still holds up, I definitely won't watch it a third time. Past is prologue, and all.

  • Beta most certainly did have porn. VHS's advantage was that it had a longer record time (therefore more porn).

  • I thought she was kicked out by her mother, and her father wouldn't allow her to live with him.

  • I'm currently reading Zero 22 by Chris Ryan. It's about an SAS operative, and is a sequel to Black Ops. I loved Black Ops but thought the ending was naff. It appears he had Zero 22 in mind when he wrote that ending. Still naff, but I'm enjoying Z 22 so far.

  • I can't see them coming back. They're hemmed in. The further right they move, the less palatable they are to the majority of Australians. They can't go left without alienating their base.

They also don't have a leader to drag them kicking and screaming through the necessary process to change. Nor do they have the ability to recruit one young enough to make it worthwhile. It will be a long and painful exercise.

Right now, I fully expect them to continue along their rightward path. As a result, I can see them reduced to One Nation numbers within a couple of electoral cycles, which is still more than the Nats get. At some point, they'll likely splinter.

  • They're supposed to be the party of small business, but small business can't afford them anymore.

  • Nah, it's just crunchy.

  • Fuck Nestle!

  • That maxim is no longer true, especially in the medium-to-long term. Reddit posts older than 8 or so years old aren't accessible (even to their creators), same with the original Digg posts. If you go back to the Usenet days, most posts haven't been archived and are lost, especially those from the smaller newsgroups. I expect over the coming decades, we'll see data loss as a growing issue.

  • Phonetics was used in WA at least as early as the 70s.

My understanding is that another method, where kids were expected to just spell and pronounce words as they believed, replaced it. Unfortunately, the alternate method was essentially dogshit, and there's been a push to return to phonetics over the last decade or so. The ABC or SBS did a doco on it.

  • I thought the first Star Wars DVD was the Phantom Menace in 2001, and the original (remastered) trilogy weren't released on DVD until 2004.

  • Were they ever released on DVD? I have the VHS tapes. I thought the best quality version was laserdisc. Beyond that, they were all the remastered editions.

  • Three if Jacqui loses her senate seat too.

  • She lives in a bubble. Same as Bolt, who also blamed the voters. They've removed themselves from the mainstream, and can't fathom the masses thinking fundamentally different from them.

Even a walloping with the clue stick, like what happened on Saturday, isn't enough to shake their faith that they're right. That's why they blame the media, the left, the immigrants, anyone but themselves.
