  • I unfollowed the guy because all he said (in this padded-with-repetitive-info video) was "shame on MEPs voting for this for folding under the pressure of farmers and far-right" while that was not the reason for the Greens to vote this way at all.

    Yes I agree it's a shame to lose this chance for diversifying, but compromising too much in the name of being practical was a big problem with German Greens under the traffic-light government.

    All things considered I can see how difficult it'd be to vote for a deal that burns the Amazons while you spend your days ringing alarm bells about the planet dying.

  • I suppose that's because they're relatively new (one year or so?).

    I switched a couple of months ago from Google Photos. They have a guide how to do the export/import, took a couple hours for my library of 20 GB. The app is basic (no face grouping or magic eraser), and the sync of new photos takes a while. They're very active with new features and improving the product though, you can take a look at their Mastodon account to follow the developments.

    All in all I'm nowhere near a heavy user and it provides the basics which is providing automatic backups without a fuss so I'm happy with it.

  • I use Tuta but unfortunately I cannot recommend it for a few reasons:

    1. They use a proprietary encryption algorithm so you can only a) encrypt emails going to other Tuta accounts and b) use their clients (no Thunderbird etc.)
    2. They're glacially slow with feature developments. Case in point email import has been on their list since forever and they only came out with it last year, but it's still in beta and exclusive to highest subscription tier.
    3. I don't find their client very user-friendly.

  • The new platform, W, will require identification and photo validation to ensure that its users are both humans and who they claim to be.

    Anonymity on the web is at risk on multiple fronts (age verification mandates and discussions around banning VPNs come to mind) so this is probably not a good thing, but I can see the value in such a social network as long it's complementary to the anonymous platforms we have today. Perhaps the closest thing to it we have today is LinkedIn.

  • I agree that their goods do not hold a candle to European ones in many cases and services are the real issue, but there's another side to the story, which is our products being in disadvantage in their market because of the tariffs, which directly results in job losses here, either through lost business or European companies moving production lines to the US. So the tariffs are a problem, and both the initial angry response from us and the sigh of relief after the deal was reached pretty much tell that story, and while tariffing back might not be the best counter, simply accepting the tariffs is not it either. A tax on Big Tech for example could've been a firm response, both to hurt American interests and catalyze our migration away from their services.

  • The tariff increases were very real though. Sure, we negotiated them down in the deal, but they were still much higher than before "liberation day", and one-sided. China on the other hand did not budge and got the US to back down eventually.
