  • I had a professor in college who believed an A should be reserved for the rare student who really nails a subject. He felt that if he gave a test, and several students got an A on it, it was a bad test. He said that was like having a speedometer on a car that only went to 50. So if you worked really hard in his class and did well, you'd likely get a B. Most students got a C, because that's average.

I actually agreed with him, but the problem was that the rest of academia didn't behave that way, so his classes lowered your GPA.

  • Yeah, you're using "quite" incorrectly here. Add the other person said, "quite good" means "really good" or "very good." You want something like "somewhat good." If it were me, I would change 5 to "decent" and 6 to "enjoyable" since "enjoyable" has a much more positive connotation than I'd expect from the middle of the scale.

  • That was actually a fun video to watch. Such a freaky creature.

  • Did trees 30 million years ago produce more sap? Or is that smaller than it looks? Because that's an amazingly big and clear hunk of amber if that mantis is the size of the ones I normally see.

  • Sounds left-leaning then. I'm sure we'll hear a lot about the violent left.

  • Interesting that they're saying he wanted to assassinate the cabinet from top down, but so far haven't said if he's historically left- or right-leaning.

  • I think lemmy_outta_here has it right: they're returning him post-abduction but have him in the wrong place. The fact that the woman in the picture is black while the guy is white didn't register as anything amiss to me, but I suppose the number of interracial couples is a small percentage of couples overall, so maybe that's fine for an indicator?

  • Oh! Didn't occur to me that it was post-abduction. That makes sense, ty.

  • As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I keep notes on what I read and have been making an annual post here on Lemmy for a few years running. Here's my 2025 post with links to the earlier ones. There are so many books across those posts that your eyes might glaze over (the earlier posts are a little lighter on notes, the later ones a little heavier), but I generally try to say whether I like a book or not, and why.

That being said, my favorite author currently writing is Adrian Tchaikovsky, and almost everything he writes is great (and he's really prolific). I'm currently reading Cage of Souls by him, which I'm enjoying.

If you can tell me the kinds of things you like, I could maybe make more specific recommendations.

  • I've read it a couple times, including a year or two ago - it's held up really, really well.

  • Heh, no, I really never play for anyone. I didn't start learning until I was 30, so even though that's more than 30 years ago, I'm not great. But I like playing and singing along. I play for the cat. She doesn't enjoy it.

  • I retired last year, but it was a horrible year (30-year marriage fell apart, had to sell our house and find a condo, stressful move, etc.), so even though it's been more than a year, I've only recently gotten to the "do what I want" phase. It's probably somewhat colored by the recent stresses, but I find I really just like staying home and laying low. I read a stupid amount of SF and fantasy, play my guitar, play a bunch of classic wow with online friends, and occasionally go to lunch with real life friends. Maybe I'll get to the point of wanting to go out and do stuff, but for now I'm happy with the quiet life.

  • Huh, I hadn't even gotten to looking at the sequels (prequels?) yet. I see that the three books are reverse chronological, as far as the action at least. I wonder if there's badness in reading them in story chronology instead of publishing chronology.

  • Well, with wire, you can thread it through the holes and then wrap it around itself.

But here's an alternative. Get a couple of pictures hooks, something like this . Tie one onto each end of a piece of string or wire. Put the hooks into the holes on your clock, then hang out over the thing on the wall.

  • Probably crawled into it like they do to crevices in the wild. I doubt very much that she shoved it in there.

  • A wire between them is what would make sense. What caused the "no such luck," and why can't you use two screws?

  • I don't think insects are capable of trust or lack thereof in the sense you mean. They really just react. I've handled lots of spiders - if they sense they're being attacked/pursued, they will run/jump/bite/whatever. But remember how huge we are to them - we're more like landscape if we're not grabbing at them. If you move slowly and let them climb up, they don't think anything of it. So "trust" in that sense.
