  • I wouldn't want to be one of the dudes in the speedboat though...

  • Unless the author of the post is tempted to quit her job as a teacher in order to become an ICE agent, her experience is actually evidence that teachers are being paid enough.

  • USB C maxes out at 240 Watts. Is that enough? A modern laptop GPU can use up to 175 Watts on its own...

Edit: I looked it up and apparently laptops are allowed to have other charging ports and to rely on those for operating at full capacity. As long as they can charge at all from USB C, they're compliant, even if they run in a reduced-capability low-power mode unless you plug them in via their other charging port.

  • Demigods love it when you disturb their tombs.

  • Well, it is getting ended...

  • About 20% of Americans are Catholics, so that means that less than half of Catholics follow Catholic doctrine in this regard.

  • Almond-scented stuff (not almonds themselves - they have no noticeable smell to me).

Pine forests, the sort with lots of dry pine needles on the ground.

  • He's saying that because the population of the USA is approximately 40 times larger than that of Israel, the loss of one Israeli life would diminish Israel to an extent proportional to how much the loss of 40 American lives would diminish the USA.

  • What's the problem here? This course of events seems both predictable and necessarily permitted by the freedoms that we have as Americans.

  • I find AI to be a better conversation partner than humans in most circumstances. It's not perfect but it's knowledgeable about pretty much every topic and it's always fully engaged and attentive. Most people, by contrast, aren't very interesting and most interesting people are busy. Of course I would prefer to talk to someone who was also subjectively experiencing and enjoying the conversation, but I can get a lot out of a conversation even without that.

  • Why there's no public support here for permissive immigration policies either. Am I so out of touch? No, it's the voters who are wrong.

  • I can't quite read the first word - looks like "ЛУБЧЕК" (Lubchek) which might be a name? The rest means "with great irritation repeats everything which he said earlier about the difficulties to which is coupled the solution of these questions." It sounds awkward in English because I'm trying to preserve the original Russian wording.

  • The cargo tracking firm Vortexa has reported that at least 34 tankers linked to Iran have circumvented the US blockade since it began, with 19 exiting the Gulf and 15 entering from the Arabian Sea.

I don't understand why this is happening. Is the US Navy somehow trying and failing to intercept these ships? (That would surprise me.) Or are they being allowed to pass deliberately?

  • I wouldn't mind being able to start my washer remotely - I want it to run while I'm not home because it's noisy, but I don't want the wet laundry to sit all day like it would if I started it and then went to work.

  • I also have a personal rule against playing team-based multiplayer games - losing because the other team was more skilled was tolerable, but losing because half of my team was goofing around and not even trying to win (or winning because the other team was doing that) was just a frustrating waste of my time.

  • The first clip show episode is actually season 4 episode 18, but the framing for the clips is so good that the episode is worth watching.

  • I consider myself very, very lucky that my ex-wife and I did not have any children.

  • Yeah, that's the problem. Once I married a woman I had known for six months, because that whole time she was crazy about me. I was the center of her world. It felt great - I wasn't used to getting a lot of attention from women, and here was one literally begging me to marry her. I went for it. But for whatever reason (maybe God thought it was funny) there are people out there who flip between over-the-top loving someone and over-the-top hating him, for no external reason. My ex-wife kept the crazy under control before we got engaged, but after that about a couple of times a week she would flip out. I ended up divorcing her after six months of marriage - the last straw was when on my birthday she flipped out because I wanted to celebrate with my family and not just with her. (She was extremely jealous - not just about other women but about my family and even my dog.)

Normal social interactions don't prepare you to deal with a person like that. Even long after the divorce, I would still wonder if maybe I was the one who had been doing something wrong - after all, she was usually so sweet and loving!
