Like if your vegan anarchist grandma and vegan anarchist dad were the same person.

I am an engineer (closer to toot toot then clicky clacky) cosplaying as a farmer in unceded aninstanabe territory in eastern ontario.

Pronouns: she/they

Maybe the real vegan theory club were the friends we made along the way ✨

  • I ordered a devanti to try, seems like it's considered an ok brand.

I hope it works well for you! Have fun!

Thanks for sharing the sauce recipe, do you add herbs/spices/salt afterwards? What things do you like to add?

Maybe the word sauce is misleading - I preserve tomatoes this way. So instead of buying cans of tomato sauce like the one below, I just use the ones we made.

It's an very basic ingredient, not something that gets used on its own if that makes sense? It is used in both the dishes I mentioned, and I use it as a base for most bean dishes. The world is your oyster for spices - the tomato sauce is just another ingredient not something that dictates what flavors should be used.

How does your brother carry oil? Some kind of lightweight, sealed container?

I think he uses those small nalgene bottles sold at outdoor supply stores.

  • Do you think Devanti dehydrators are also ok? I found a deal on one with stainless steel racks 10-trays.

I'm not familiar with the brand but I took a quick look and it seems like it has two of the features which were most important to me: trays you could pull out and that didn't have a hole in the centre (i.e. circular dehydrators) and temperature control.

Do you have a recipe for the tomato sauce you make yourself?

We only make it to preserve it, so it's not seasoned at all: https://nchfp.uga.edu/how/can/how-do-i-can-tomatoes/standard-tomato-sauce/

For oily meals, is it actually possible to just take oil/butter/fat separately and add it to the meal when you prepare it? It's kinda interesting that lots of camping meals are low on fat because it doesn't dehydrate well, but at the same time fat can actually keep long by itself and is calorie dense, so you would think it would be good for hiking.

Yes, you can bring oil with you to add to meals. My brother actually cooks in the back country and he brings oil to cook with. I agree fat is good for hiking - I eat plenty of nuts.

  • Oh, I didn't realize you were an admin at quokka.au?

  • Be sure to check resale sites, community groups etc for second hand dehydrator. They can be pricey, but you may be able to get a good one second hand. I have an Excalibur 4 tray which has been excellent for our household of two people.

Unfortunately there is a big gap in what you can dehydrate vs what you can get freeze dried. Dehydration works best in inherently low fat foods, and you can't safely dehydrate a meal that has had fat added. It's important to store the food in an air tight container to protect it from moisture and (additional) oxygen.

The shelf life of dehydrated food is also much shorter. I rotate through my food each year and even that might be pushing it. You can find guidelines online, try to stick to scientific resources like agricultural programs.

My go-to (both for camping and having emergency food at home) is chilli made in the electric pressure cooker. The chili is just beans, homemade tomato sauce (no oil), spices, veggies and textured vegetable protein. I also dehydrate rice to go with it. I've also had good luck with misir wot. Basically anything with legumes cooked in a sauce, where things are cooked until they are soft and even on the mushy side will generally rehydrate pretty okay.

I also use my dehydrator to dry out tomatoes for paste instead of trying to cook out all the water on the stove. I wish I had a larger one for this task, but that's a rather infrequent use so it's not worth getting a bigger one. We also dehydrate what comes out of the tomato mill (skin, seeds, pulp) to make tomato powder.

I haven't done a 7 day trip in a while, but on my last 4 day back country trip I brought the chilli, misir wot, oats and a variety of trail mix type snacks and we weren't hurting for lack of variety.

  • This is just my personal experience, so please don't take it as a universal truth. I'm in my 40s..

I experience paradoxical calming with Vyvanse, but at the same time it masks my exhaustion. That itself sounds like it's in conflict, right?

An example: if I don't take my meds I am in a constant state of an fight/flight/freeze depending on the day or circumstances. I've had trouble remembering to take my meds in the past few weeks. On one of those days what was supposed to be a 15 minute speaking part on a tour for visiting professionals turned into the group splitting up and me having to do the whole tour myself. I haven't given a tour in years and it resulted in my speaking for two hours straight which I was not prepared for. It ended at like 11:30 am. I just crashed after. I had to take the rest of the day off work and I just went home and slept until morning.

I think if I had taken my meds the tour would not have taken so much out of me. I would have less decision paralysis. I would have still been exhausted, because walking and talking loudly for that long is tiring for most people, but the crash would have held off for a few hours and not have been so extreme.

Do you have trouble eating or drinking balanced meals? I wonder if a vitamin or even calorie deficiency could be contributing. I have to eat before I take my meds (even though I find it hard to eat in the morning) or my brain crashes hard in the afternoon.

I want to ask more about the overtime. Why are you doing so much overtime? Are you unable to hit objectives? Are the objectives "real" or self imposed? Or do you have trouble transitioning away from work?

I would absolutely not recommend you do what I do, but I think sharing might make you feel less alone: I work excessive amounts of overtime but I just don't log it. I've never had performance issues at work, and keep getting told that 'just because something is easy for me doesn't mean I can expect it from others' so I guess the perception is I am high performing? Is the overtime part of this? Not sure. I usually end up going down unproductive rabbit holes so it's not like I'm churning out widgets and making others look bad in comparison.

Objectively I have received accolades and industry recognition for my work. But I don't see it that way. I feel like I have to work longer because of all the extra effort that goes into doing what I feel are basic tasks. I can't work off a surface level understanding of something. I need to understand it before I make a decision. And then poof it disappears from my brain and next time I need to do this all again so it's not like it's an investment of effort. Part of the struggle is that I don't have objectives or metrics to meet, so there is no measure that I can understand (I'm also autistic btw) that I can use to say I've done 'enough'.

Transitions are also very difficult. I used to work on places with literal bells signifying when lunch and breaks occurred, and everyone started and ended at the same time each day. We would say goodbye and go home. Where I work now there is a lot of flexibility to the work day. We have 'core hours'. I lose track of time, blink and all of a sudden I've been working for 10-12 hours.

Anyways, this is starting to have a massive toll on my physical health. I've been doing this for 6 years now at three different jobs. It started when my job became less defined based on tasks and I started to take legal responsibility for the work of others (I'm an engineer who supervises other less experienced engineers) 0/10 do not recommend. In an attempt to not make this all about me I'll end this with the statement that I have a plan to stop this behavior, so I will be okay.

I wonder if you are able to identify why you are working the overtime and address that. One of the hardest things about having a disability is that you have to tell people about it (at least the functional limitations) and clearly identify that these are a result of the disability. Theoretically once they understand the cause of the behavior (in your case, excessive overtime) they are usually willing to work with you to find a solution versus it becoming disciplinary.

You mention public service so I assume you are unionized? It's so hard to fire someone who is unionized (which I think is a good thing). I was in a situation where in any non unionized workplace I would have had to fire a specific team member. It was awful for everyone. The solution was that we found him another position that better met his skill set (same pay etc) and he is thriving. He was much better at organizing other people than doing the specific technical work that we needed, so we found a spot where it was his job to plan the technical work and not execute it. I wonder if the solution for you is either getting more clear instructions/expectations so you are not working overtime that isn't needed (because you can meet expectations without it), or a change in role to one where you can meet your targets within the normal looking hours.

    Good luck.

  • It's all weird moral judgments wrapped up to look like meritocracy.

  • Someone drops a blatant turd of a post somewhere on .ml.

  • I would like to understand: is there generally an expectation that anyone should be able to say anything, anywhere online? That's never been my understanding but I've seen a considerable number of people who see get comments deleted or being banned as censorship.

Like, technically and literally maybe that's the right word but the implication is that it is outrageous. I feel like I'm missing something.

  • 11/10, would gobble

  • Yo I'm stealing this:

You just need to ask: Am I treating this being as a resource? If yes, and you don’t have to, then stop. That is both actionable and measurable.

I like how it can be used against all sorts of exploitation that is seen as net good like small businesses "creating jobs" but they are just stealing labour value.

Pregnancy is my worst nightmare but even if it wasn't, I truly hate being told what to do or how I feel. I'm therefore very on board with not trying to guess what some potential child would want.

  • So tru

  • Bold of you to assume there was a plan!

We're going to fix it. Add failsafe relays to each panel (so they go to zero when there is no power). If there is no power we can assume the UPS has failed. It does need to travel through successive panels, but we can map the system and know if one is dark all the upstream ones are too.

  • That sounds super awful.

I'm navigating something tangentially related: worrying about how my reduced ability to mask combined with an increasingly stressful (for everyone) work environment is reflecting on me. I want to ask for a few things for people to be understanding about, but I feel like I might have to disclose and I don't want to do that.

Have you disclosed at work/do you have formal accomodations?

  • Ontario, Canada

Here in the US, it's always been weekly pay

There is no required pay frequency. I haven't personally been paid monthly, but it is allowed..

I don't think they ever had an issue with employers refusing to pay over here.

Trial shifts are a thing here, especially for service or kitchen jobs. It's illegal, but many people don't know their rights.

I've had problem try to not pay me after I quit. I had to take them to the labour board.

How often do you read about people being asked to clock out before they leave? Or only getting paid as long as re store is open and having to clean after? I feel like that's a very common

In China, my mom told me that sometimes they delay your pay for like a few days to sometimes even almost a month late... like its routine...

I've been paid late in Ontario. I've known people who had pay cuts because the company was t doing well.

There's no such thing as the 1.5x bonus for time over 40 hours in China...

I'm an engineer. As such, I am not covered by the employment standards act and my employer is not obligated to pay me to for overtime.

Sometimes they have performance-based bonus pay.

Like for example: my mom worked in electronics sales (think a sort of "Best Buy" type of thing) and like get commissions for making more sales... that type of stuff...

That's not uncommon at all. Some jobs are 100% commission.

Nothing to described is unheard of in Canada/the States. I'm kind of waiting for the "SIKE I WAS DESCRIBING THE US ALL ALONG" but figured I'd comment in case it was useful to anyone.

  • My hot take is that being "inclusive" when it comes to gender, race, nationality, family status has such a low bar. It's basically "don't use slurs at work". Please note I didn't call this equity - it doesn't do much to improve the experience of equity deserving groups. I'm not suggesting they benefit from this.

It's kinda funny how it demonstrates how foolish it was to exclude people based in race or gender, because those traits don't really prevent people from performing the function the employer wants them too, as long as everyone chills the fuck out and leaves them alone.

I can't even get people to message me when they see me with my (giant, over ear) headphones on at my desk. They will just stand behind me, talking at me, and getting mad. The most simple things are too hard!

  • If you would like to share, I would be interested to know more. I am extremely justice sensitive, but I know what is "just" to me is not just to others. I'm not sure how that can be reconciled in your proposed approach.
