  • I have a hard time imagining him giving up his fixation with gold and his own name. Since he would be charging 10 or 100 times more than his cost, and it would be paid by his supporters and the taxpayers, I don't think he'd care about the price. They'd be made cheaply in China anyway.

    I can't say that it would work for me, mind you. I'd probably get myself examined by a neurologist first!

  • It's hard as hell, but for me it comes down to this: we have to decide if they're suffering so much that death would be a relief for them. Since we don't have a common language, all we can do is go by what other signs and indicators are available. I don't entirely trust veterinarians to make that decision, because in the past it has seemed to me that they tend to err on the side of euthanasia.

    I've done it both ways. Either way, it hurts.

  • If I owned movie theaters, I'd start making my own movies. Hollywood is a dying star, heading towards black hole status.

    And at this point, a drooling idiot could make better movies than Disney or most of Hollywood. Always excepting Guillermo del Toro, of course! He's amazing.

  • Ironically I was called an "Uncle Tom atheist" by the then-president of American Atheists (himself a New Atheist, I believe), because I attended a Unitarian Universalist Church at the time. And also because I advocated mutual understanding rather than his own position, which was to mock believers. But he was trying to sell his book.

    That said, the audience seemed to much prefer my approach.

  • Well, I just wrote and posted a review of Everything for Everyone on BookWyrm.social and copied it here (and on my Mastodon account). I'm an older reader, and I preferred older books even when I was a child. So many of the books reviewed on my BookWyrm account are pre-1980 or so. That said, there are a lot of wonderful old books - including many in the public domain - which are really worth reading!
