  • The issue I see with that is that it defines "natural" in a way that is both useless, because it literally applies to anything in existence, and doesn't fit the way people generally use it, that being something more like "how things are when they have not been significantly altered by people". Under a more typical usage, human activity isn't natural by definition, not because humans are special in some way but just because the term natural has been arbitrarily created to describe everything except that activity.

  • No, i only remember being asked that like once or twice, but it sticks around in my head because I'm still not sure what the "correct" answer that doesn't give a misleading impression and doesn't require a longer-than-expected explanation is.

  • I always feel a bit weird if the question of "are you single by choice?" comes up, cause like, I didn't choose to be aro/ace, my brain just happens to be that way, so technically I feel like the answer is "no", but if you answer that with no I worry people will mistake that for " not single by choice because of being unlikable in some way and therefore unable to find someone despite one's efforts". But then one could also argue that I could technically still decide to look for a partner anyway despite not actually wanting one, so it would be a choice, but if you dont get to choose what you want, does it really count? And then the concept of determinism and if choices even truly exist at all enters my head and I just give up and say something like "it depends on what you mean by that."

  • Ah, but if one just keeps responding, surely eventually the louder person will make their vocal cords too sore to talk and then you can win the discussion instead by getting the last word in /s

  • Cnidarians. (The sort of animals that includes jellyfish and sea anenomes and coral and such). Theyre so old that the first known predatory animal as far as I'm aware was one of them, and some of them still resemble those ancient versions to a significant degree. Even tho every time theres a mass extinction corals seem to be some of the first things to go, and jellyfish tend to be slow, stupid and not very good at controlling where they go, it somehow works out for them.

  • Having a pet lizard has made me have a hard time taking the "lizard people/reptilians" conspiracy theorists seriously. Like, have these people actually been around reptiles? Deeply unserious creatures. Not generally social, sure, but they definitely have body language and would fail terribly at running some kind of complex scheme.

  • tzatziki, or a 50 50 mix of sour cream and ketchup, are favorites of mine.

  • Tbf, there's a certain percentage of people who will deliberately give bad sounding answers to mess with surveys, so that might be an overestimate.

  • I feel like this makes sense for very politically focused spaces, especially for less "mainstream" ideas like db0's anarchist communities, just cause not every community will allow arguments about their stance, and even ones that do will see more arguments turn into flame wars and incivility than communities for which there simply isnt as much for heated arguments to start over, especially when the arguments arent always something "new" to that space and might just be someone from outside noticing and saying "your ideology is bad because [insert reason that community has probably heard enough before to be tired of]".

Am a bit curious about why pawb is so high though, Ive not really noticed much of the hate that furries sometimes would get on other platforms (I guess it could be because theyre all banned but I doubt it, because that wouldnt hide it from communities outside of pawb). The instance administration has always felt rather reasonable whenever Ive seen like instance announcements or defederation decisions or such too, at least by my standards. Itd be interesting maybe to see what communities these bans tend to come from and what reasons are given, just looking through the modlog doesnt seem to help much there given that it doesnt seem to let one sort by instance.

  • I feel like that would really skew the data, because it would then just be "instances that defederate some big instances (or just ones that defederate .world) and others that dont", It'd be hard to ban a major instances worth of users with even a heavy handed "normal" moderation strategy surely?

  • I dont usually bother with the glass, I just scoop them up with the paper and try to reposition it so that they dont crawl off before I reach the door

  • Iapetus and Io. Iapetus just looks pretty, with it's two tone color and equatorial ridge, and Io is a volcano dominated world in a way that seems unique in the solar system if we exclude cryovolcanism, maybe earth comes the closest but it's not nearly the same.

  • I don't really trust myself with guns tbh. Not in a "might decide to use them inappropriately" sort of way, but whenever I've fired them before, it's gotten my anxiety issues to spike in a way that only a couple other things do worse, and my ability to think clearly and actually aim at anything has been serious impaired. It does depend on the type of gun a bit, shotguns trigger it the worst ive found thus far for example and very small-caliber bolt action rifles the least, but anything actually reliably useful if you were in a fight is likely to be towards the worse end of it and even the milder ones are stressful enough to use that realistically if I bought one, it'd get used for target shooting maybe twice and end up forgotten in a gun locker as bait for thieves or something.

  • Im not sure that'd count, as while there are social and legal repercussions and a higher risk of a few diseases, human meat, billionaire or not, isnt inheritly toxic or such, and does contain nutritional value.

  • If you wanted to make it possible to opt out of certain categories of ads (like alcohol) on personal devices/computers, without having to tell the advertiser that you're an alcoholic or similar, perhaps a law could mandate that ads made for those products or brands associated with them be tagged as such in some way, and that software that displays ads should have a setting to not display ones that arrive with that tag? That way the setting only needs to be client side. I mean ideally you'd just not have ads at all but that's a much bigger and more difficult fight than just alcohol obviously.

  • That's the fastest way (barring unproven space warping whatever) to get around, but what sort of engine is going to give you both enough fuel efficiency and enough power at the same time to actually do that? Even nuclear rocketry struggles with that to my understanding unless the planets in question are very close.

  • In my family growing up we'd call something like this "haystacks". Ostensibly one would put the stuff on top of a pile of the chips, but since it'd fall off or between them, it inevitably ended up being "use corn chips as scoops or tongs to grab the rest of the food with".

  • Tbf, 1g of thrust is a lot to assume, there are quite a few ways to do a high-efficiency rocket that result in extremely low thrust but applied for a long period of time. Still probably better to arrange them the way you suggest but I'm not sure it would be a huge problem for something like, say, an ion engine for example

  • I mean, not really? There's lots of reasons to use aliens in a story and I'm struggling to think of one that only works if you assume low-diversity planets

  • Showerthoughts @lemmy.world

Fennecs kind of look like the "little grey/green aliens" of the fox world.

  • Spore @pawb.social

Took advantage of the cutscene you get upon scanning the wrecked spaceship at the start of space stage to get a picture of my newest ship against a sky backdrop.

  • Spore @pawb.social

Discovered today that somebody has made a mod that seems to make the flora editor actually work. Ive seen mods to do that before but they'd always been only partially working.

  • techsupport @lemmy.world

How might I go about either rotating one mirrored display but not the other, or setting up a second display such that the mouse does not move over the edge and must be switched with a hotkey or such?

  • Spore @pawb.social

Starting another savefile after a few months away from spore, new creature at the end of creature stage. Decided to try making an eyeless creature for once as I dont use the ears enough.

We're probably pretty fortunate that humans have at least some degree of self control over when we stop eating.

That moment when you find a meme mentioning spore in the wild and have to figure out how Lemmy's cross posting works

Thought Id show off something I made a few years ago as I was looking at it again, my favorite creation Ive made in this game. The wheels, meant to be centrifuges for gravity, actually counter-rotate.

  • Satisfactory @lemmy.world

New to this game, and recently finished my first little factory to have a proper building and a little bit of decoration instead of just being haphazardly placed temporary structures.

Half the memes in my "all" feed today, for some reason:

  • Spore @pawb.social

Havent done an actual playthrough of spore in a little while and decided to start a new one. This is my new species, the Irridichal, just before moving to tribal stage.

  • Spore @pawb.social

Made an ekranoplan recently as I think the concept of those is interesting. Meant to be similar to the irl Lun-class ekranoplan but not an actual recreation or anything.

My favorite thing to make in spore are "realistic" looking spaceships. This is one I made this morning, called the Flower of the Void.

Creating this community cause Ive not yet seen anyone else make a spore community yet and I wanted there to be one
