  • That's interesting, from a conversational analysis point of view there are literally little measurable breaks in all conversations where anyone can try to take the turn.

    Does that mean you lot can't hear them?

    Or is it a matter of not having the timing to hit them, o maybe that other people (verbally)wrestle the turn from you?

  • The worst thing that could happen if he refused to relay after the Cauberg and to lead in the final km, was to finish 2nd.

    I suppose, but we don't know if he did "proper" pulls or just alibi-pulls. In any case, Skjelmose is usually one of the faster finishers amongst his peers; if he'd had anything left in the tank I think he would beat Remco 9 sprints out of 10. Well, maybe 7 sprints out of 10.

    Anyway, the validation for long races holds. I just mean that the configuration of the race today was special, and perhaps our first impression about the performance of the members of this group was a bit too flattering and may give excessively high hopes for future races.

    Perhaps, but I saw Albert Philipsen chase down 3-4 attacks in the last 8 kms - surely there was no need to do that with Skjelmose 1½ minute up ahead. I think he could have podiumed without expending that energy. I agree that the field was a little weak this year, but it was a good race none the less.

    The women's race was also very entertaining.

  • Skjelmose said in an interview with maybe the Danish press that he was cooked and expected to be left behind on Cauberg the last time, so I think he just had nothing left.

    I was impressed by Albert Withen Philipsen, he's only 19. Not Seixas levels of impressed, but still a strong performance for a young man in a race over 200 km.

  • I know nothing about gravel, but I know many people enjoy riding it and it's growing, especially in the US.

    A couple of Danish former road racing pros are doing really well on the gravel scene, I think. Mads Würtz Schmidt comes to mind.

  • Yes, damn shame. Danish commentators said that Philipsen is riding with experimental clips on his bike, and that's why vdP couldn't use it. If that's true that's a terrible decision precisely because this sort of situation could occur.

  • See, I know almost nothing about the Dutch cuisine. I heard you deep fry almost everything, and I like stroopwafels a lot.

    In 10th grade I spent 2 weeks in the Netherlands on a school trip, but I remember absolutely nothing about the food which is actually sort of odd.

    If I had to guess, I'd assume you eat classic farmers food, carb heavy with some sort of meat and dairy. But maybe that's just because I assume everyone north of the Rhine to eat that.

    I'm from Denmark, we traditionally ate porridge and potatoes and pork, and of course rye bread so dense you can club someone to death with it if you want to.

  • Denmark was offered the whole territory after WW1, but declined and had a referendum which divided the territory very cleanly by ethnicity and along cultural and linguistic lines.

    In a saner world, it would serve as a model for resolving disputes about land.
