  • The place we adopted our cat from sent us home with that exact model of the yellow long tailed mouse toy!

  • Territorial birds can tell which of their neighbors is singing, and show up to investigate if you play a song from a non-local male! So maybe local celebrities?

  • Weaning off or greatly reducing oil usage will help in the long run. It’s just a matter of whether the lesson sticks or everyone goes right back to it if/when the strait opens.

  • Overturning Citizens United would go a long way.

  • In addition to what the other comments said, he also coauthored a book about the development of modern western society called The Dawn of Everything. It’s about a ton of stuff but I’d say it primarily looks at social organization and freedom. I really highly recommend it.

  • Brain fart, the documentary I was thinking of was actually about the Incas! But it’s the same time period, it’s PBS Nova: The Great Incan Rebellion if you can find it anywhere. Unfortunately PBS doesn’t seem to host it online anymore.

  • I for one welcome the return of David Graeber’s zombie.

  • “They were so cruel, they ripped out peoples’ hearts!!” Yeah, don’t look too hard at how Europeans carried out the death penalty during the same period… shit, gibbeting was practiced in Europe until the 19th century in some places. At least getting your heart ripped out is quick.

  • To add to this, a person with a car is also inherently armed due to the ability to use a car as a weapon.

  • I see so many of those disposed of on the street near a vape store and it drives me nuts.

  • IMO stopping and letting the car pass isn’t always correct either. If you have doubts about whether a driver sees you then for sure wait, but waiting regardless of whether you’re seen/acknowledged can cause confusion and potential issues as well. My main strategy is to be predictable and defensive: it should always be obvious where I’m headed, and I should always make aggressive eye contact both to be seen and assess the driver awareness.

That’s probably more of an older elementary school distinction for kids though, toddler age is definitely just ‘don’t walk into the street without an adult’.

  • Yeah, I think here (Los Angeles) the only reason outside of breaking the lease you can be evicted is if the landlord wants to personally live in the home or it’s getting demolished.

  • Yes, but at least a septic system is underground and functioning most of the time. They’re living with it literally just pumped outdoors. It’s basically an automated chamber pot that’s getting dumped outside.

  • I was under the impression that the truly harmful part of CFCs was the F, given its higher reactivity and less natural presence as an ion in the environment.

  • Is it worse than having methane?

  • That’s fascinating, it sounds like it happened due to the eruption occurring under ocean water, since it requires a chlorine ion from salt to break down methane. If they could translate this into something you could dump into the atmosphere over methane hot spots it could make a positive impact.

  • That your hippy dippy “different technologies” take is kind of naive

Don’t sit here and act like you don’t live as the beneficiary of thousands of years of selective breeding of Mesoamerican staple crops, not even to touch on the medications you take that come from the Americas. I’m talking about them as different technologies because they are, and recreating things like terra preta is an active area of research for current day use. Because, guess what, our current technology that you’re jacking off about sucks ass and relies on dumping a metric fuckton of nitrogen and phosphorous in the form of fertilizer runoff into waterways, creating enormous dead zones.

‘Who can kill the most people with it’ is a very American way of understanding the past or technology in general. You can’t kill anyone with a telescope, that doesn’t mean it’s not a technology.

  • Why bother doing any of that shit when you can maintain a productive environment and slit that asshole’s throat while he sleeps?
