  • My understanding is, this is a very common cause of death among divers. The pressure doesn't kill you, but it gets you stuck long enough that you suffocate. Because even if safety teams are notified immediately, getting you out is difficult enough that they might not be able to get you out in time before you die

  • My understanding is that there were genuine journalistic concerns with regards to Anita Sarkeesian, but then the narrative ended up getting twisted into a sexism thing when sexist gamers got involved. If I recall correctly, the initial issue was that the editor appeared to not be impartial when selecting who to write for what topic, and people believed that the perceived partiality was because of the fact that Sarkeesian and the editor were in a relationship. It's a clear conflict of interest, but nothing major. What would have/should have been a minor journalistic scandal devolved into creepy incelposting.

    Which really muddied the waters, because it also caused many regular people to dismiss the initial, core concern that the journal did have a conflict of interest.

    While Sarkeesian definitely did not deserve the harassment, I think it should also be noted that she is a somewhat problematic individual. There was scandal that came up back in 2020 or so where she accused a game developer/ex-boyfriend of being abusive, which is generally acknowledged to have led to his suicide just several days later. But later reports revealed that many of her accusations were incompatible with evidence, and so it's unclear how much, if any, of the accusations were truthful

    Edit: mixed up two people. I'm unsure how much the wires got crossed, and I don't have time to fact check myself right now. Please take this comment with a huge grain of salt

  • Can't convert INR to USD in my head, but I'm comparing costs between parts - PSU looks unusually cheap. I would typically clock a good one to be about the same price as a motherboard.

    I would double check the PSU - it's one of those things where you really shouldn't skimp out on.

    Edit: as another commenter pointed out as well: PSU wattage seems low. You want a wattage rating that's about double the expected max power consumption

    You can also typically save some money by getting a non-X CPU instead of X. eg, 7600 instead of 7600X. They're usually virtually indistinguishable in performance, but the non-X is typically much cheaper and has lower power draw (and better thermal headroom as a result).

    The 7000 series is also last gen, so you might be able to get a used CPU and save extra money there. CPU's virtually don't degrade (unless you actually just abuse them), so there shouldn't be any technical concerns about getting a used CPU. Of course, watch for scams when buying used parts.

  • My biggest concern is not that fertility rate is low/population decline is happening, it's that it's happening way too quickly for society to be able to handle it.

    We're talking like 4 old people per child (estimated number). Not only would it be a massive strain on the economy to have so many elderly people/retirees to take care of, older people will also have a highly disproportionate account of political power due to their relative abundance. If it's already such a big deal that boomers were twisting the political landscape for their gain, I shudder to think what would happen at this larger and longer scale.

    All of this is going to be a breeding ground for misogyny and right-wing ideology when people start thinking that it's [opposite gender]'s fault that they're not living as well as they were promised by the previous generation. We've already seen it in South Korea, and we're seeing it now with the rise of isolation and inceldom.

    Plus, without younger people to take up the mantle, many industries that we rely on will need to downsize, and a lot of institutional knowledge will be lost. Many roles that require a "master-to-apprentice" style of learning will be lost and will be unable to recover, even if the population started growing again.

    Fox News has the wrong take here, as it is wont to have. But we genuinely should be really concerned that birth rates across all developed countries are this low below replacement rate and are still dropping

  • I think in part because speculating what the land looks like on an alien planet is actually really hard to do, and the vast majority of artists just wing it. With sufficient planning and rigor, alien planets should look normal.

    For instance, I think the landmass of Tira-292b looks pretty natural. It's a hypothetical planet created for the Alien Biospheres project, a YouTube series that tries to build up an alien ecosystem as accurately to science as reasonably possible

  • There's a reason grass is so common - it's because it's a wildly effective life strategy. Grass is actually quite hard to eat - there's basically no nutrition in the leaves themselves, and grass evolved to incorporate silica "needles" in its leaves, so that it wears down your teeth when you try to eat it anyways.

    Not to say that it's impossible to eat grass, but you need to undergo a ton of highly specialized adaptations to make it possible. For most animals (including humans), it's just not worth the effort

  • Oil-based markers are good for color blending, but are somewhat more expensive than regular. I personally wouldn't recommend using them for outlines due to the blending potential, but I believe I've seen people use them for outlines just fine. Personally, I'm pretty partial to acrylic paints. Water them down to get a nice watercolor-like texture, or use it as-is for a solid color. It's quite versatile, so you should be able to cover the background.

  • If we consider it to be a bug and that those are false reports, then the actual number of Linux users would be 5.33 * (1-0.23) = 4.1%.

    IMO that seems like a more reasonable number than 5.33. 5.33 is a crazy jump month-over-month, even factoring in Chinese New Years (February results)
