  • just to clarify: there's still a ton to do each turn in Old World, you just have a limited number of "Orders" you can issue each turn, so you usually can't move every single unit and worker every turn, which forces the player to prioritize and creates a fun extra layer of strategy

  • compared to other historical 4X games, I particularly like the orders system, which minimizes micro-management and late-game slog, and the characters/families/events, which keeps you on your toes as things are always changing both internally and externally.

    it's been a while since i played Civ 4 or 5 but i loved them too when i used to play them!

  • true, one of impacts on the resource economy, for example, is that here you don't have stockpile limits, but you have carrying capacities, so if you have more than you can carry it gets left behind when you move

  • @athatet gave a great summary, and the Civ games are the biggest mainstream example of 4X games. there are many sub-genres and lots of games that use it as a foundation but extend it in various ways, and Folk Emerging does that too by centering around nomadic gameplay and complex ecosystems
