  • There are many many ways to fund development of the Threadiverse, and most of them do not require platforming messages that routinely call for the literal murder of everyone living in a Western civilization

    ‘death to america/marg bar amrika’ is an internationally recognized protest chant that’s been in use for 45 years. people using it aren’t saying that everyone in 'a western civilization' should be literally murdered, it's a slogan to say ‘down with US imperialism’

  • 'death to all jews' is not equivalent to 'death to israel'; one targets ethnic group, one targets state. conflating them is the antisemitism i already pointed out.

    ansar allah use the slogan because they oppose US imperialism and israeli genocide. specifically the blockade of yemen and current gaza genocide. calling groups resisting genocide 'terrorists' while israel commits genocide is propaganda framing.

    i've explained what the phrase means multiple times. if people choose to interpret it as ethnic hatred despite explanation, that's a choice, not inevitable misunderstanding.

    anyway i was explaining what a well-established protest slogan means as it's used in other places that aren't german. 'death to america/israel' means opposition to empire/state, not murder of people.

    if you struggle this much with subtext it likely makes you extremely vulnerable to manipulation

  • you start out by claiming that we must take words literally, 'how languages work' but you go on to refer to what's happening as the 'gaza war' rather than just the latest chapter of an ongoing genocide. you're calling resistance to 75 years of occupation 'terrorism' while bombing hospitals and starving 2 million people is just 'war.' that's more a propaganda framing on your part than linguistic consistency.

    if we're intent on being linguistically consistent, you're also conflating the state of israel with all jewish people, claiming 'death to israel' means wanting to kill jews. this conflation is antisemitic. it makes jews collectively responsible for the israeli state's actions.

    'death to israel' opposes a state. 'death to america' (which i say as an american) opposes an empire. these are political positions about states and systems, not ethnic hatred.

    additionally since you're so invested in 'how languages work': comparing a protest slogan about a state ('death to israel') with a personal murder threat ('i want to murder you and your children') is a false equivalence. states and people are different categories.

    the propagandists i'm referring to are doing the same thing you are, taking a literal translation without any of the subtext+context and interpreting/repeating it as if it were an actual death threat. if this is the first you're hearing about the actual meaning of the idiom then it's clearly been effective on you

    personally I appreciate the shock value of it, in a reclamation sort of way. I want to see an end to american imperial hegemony and the genocidal ethnostate it's enabling.
