    I would say unless you’re management and that’s part of your job, then for your own sanity you might have to let it go. Keep notes so you know who’s who, but it’s not your job to fix other people.

    Unfortunately, management has the same attitude 😕

  • Got to the airport really stupidly early once and stayed there all night, because I was travelling with two people who also couldn't drive. One's dad was going to drive us but injured himself so we took a train over there 8 hours earlier than we would have.

    Tl;DR trains make people do long visits at station.

    And weirdly there were a lot of other passengers entering the airport at 6AM or sooner and they were having a great time wasting their money on everything.

    But also I presume the pizza comes already made and kept warm or something. If not, then some authentic Italian pizzas, the basic topping, softer and chewy ones, can take just 6-12 minutes to cook. People have time to sit down at cafes and restaurants sometimes :). Maybe only the USA has the speedy aeroplane infrastructure you're used to

  • It's alright, there was worse stuff going on in my life at the time and also better stuff; it seems not important in comparison. I live with my family while studying, which has helped me best navigate these issues.

    I almost wouldn't have "fallen for it" but the advisor, to my face, insisted she was right, and then the AI misinformation came under the guise of a real human (they probably just typed my query into chat gpt to get the response) and I was very excited because being presented with a new opportunity is always going to be exciting; the course I wanted to move to was like a more specific part of what I study now, the bit that I enjoy most.

    As for using AI to learn things... The extent to which we try to do that is ultimately down to the individual, but trying to access things online leads you back to AI, it becomes hard to know what resource to access to best replace AI to learn coding. I'm trying it from books and stack exchange from now on.

    Lecturers leave practice material with no answers expecting us to use AI to make worked solutions. I think they probably make a lot of the course harder expecting AI to "accelerate people's learning," and they certainly endorsed it to some extent for my 1st year of undergrad, like I said.

  • Cheeseburger - provides a bunch of protein, fat, some salad and bread; it's an ultimately balanced meal and one designed for sustain people (e.g through flights or staying up at night/in the morning)

    Some of us don't eat them that often because of our culture, anyway.

    It's definitely what I would get. I always need extra protein packed all together.

    Pizza - You just know it's going to be nice. Need I say more? It's less about comfort but about safety and not wasting money

    • 2 years ago I started the process of ADHD diagnosis, during university.

    • I had to get an appointment with the disability administration after initially making contact with a GP to set it in motion.

    • The disability advisor suggests I simply start a new course if I'm not attaining what I want in my current one

    • I explain that I can't because I already did this and student finance in England only covers 2 undergraduate starts.

    • They insist no, I'm wrong - there's a secret way to do more and people do this all the time

    • I'm told to ask at the SU advice team about this

    • I email them and prompt-ly (badum tsh) get a reply which, in retrospect, is very AI-like. It's longer than needs to be for what it says and is the same length as what ChatGPT "aims" for in all its replies, if you're familiar with it.

    • bare in mind I told them the exact details of my situation, why I felt I wouldn't be able to get more or sufficient funding

    • First step is to contact the department I want to transfer to, then interview with them, then write a letter to Student Finance for a gifted year of funding.

    • a bit closer to the relevant time, I email them again and say "hi, regarding our earlier email, how can I factor in these facts about my specific situation-"

    • (presumably) AI response which is a completely 180-turn on the previous one despite having the same input information; "Unfortunately you will NOT be able to do that, because you'll only get one year of funding!" (As I initially presumed)

    The good news about all of this is that I didn't ultimately want to change course. I was just being manipulated by someone very negative seeking an extra year of funding to the university, and was really intimidated by how difficult things were.

    The bad news is I can't change disability advisor and I don't really want to talk to her ever again, lol. She also insisted that I see specialist support even though I insisted I didn't need to, and then I ended up owing the government money because they didn't update the information with ND specialists to reflect that i wasn't in full time study the following year.

    My second worst AI experience would probably just be how we're actually expected to engage with it at university. My first year had one or two modules where they informed us we should be using AI to learn code, and this meant that instructors were almost totally unengaged in teaching us to code 1-1. I wouldn't have used AI at all if not for being prompted to do so by university. It's... A habit, ultimately. Do it over and you feel you can do it again.

    I've been doing a course on "Foundations of Writing", inspired by the historical school syllabus The Trivium once used across Europe.

    It explores the rigid - but generally unwritten - rules of how the English language works, so among them was that definition of when to capitalise words. I found that particular fascinating because when I learned it at school it was just explained as "names of places people or things" which isn't significantly more simple than the afforementioned, correct definition.

    So by that modern-school rule, one would perhaps assume the name of species names (or nationality names) falls under the capitalisation rule - but alas, no!

  • To be honest I think they are a large driving force behind it's development/developing it the way they did.

    I remember as early as 10 years ago people (creeps usually) saying "deep fakes will be very advanced in the near future... You may as well stop worrying about it" and other things along those lines, basically threatening their victims or declaring that they would make limitless deepfake porn of celebrities and politicians they don't like.

    Lo and behold, deep fakes and AI porn are among the first things that LLMs can provide us with. To be 'bullish' about AI and have a deregulation attitude towards it essentially means you're endorsing these elements of AI - the dumb AI girlfriend shit should be enough for anyone to be anti-AI.

    I get that this is grasping at straws a bit, though. Me piecing dispirit data points together.

  • In the context of biblical history, I've heard that, because of the Alexandrian empire and it's 3-4 off-shoot kingdoms, Greek was actually the 'Lingua Franca' (default language for international communication) throughout the middle east; from before the Romans arrived, to Jesus's time, to until after the Roman empire split in two for good.

    I guess it is hard to supplant an existing Lingua Franca. France today is a good example - they are very defensive of their language, once the Standard Internationale, and so France sees less English speakers proportionally than other European countries such as Spain, Nederland and Germany.

    So... The middle East's dominant languages were Greek and Persian, Greek and Persian, Greek and Persian - then Muhammed shows up with Islam, and they conquer surrounding states. Arabic is spreading. And this is testament to Persia's linguistic domination, right - Arabic calligraphy comes from the Persian alphabet. That's bonkers; a group of people, B, subjugated by A, manages to get A to assume their script for all writing.

    At that point, the whole(-ish) middle east now had a different alphabet - neither greek nor Roman - to write in. Languages don't tend to change their script once they've settled on one. The only examples I know are Poland, who did it because of catholic church's influence , and Mongolia, who were forced to by the soviet union; it doesn't happen naturally. Oh also Turkey, which was again a government mandate.

    Certain scripts are better for certain language sounds; I don't expect Arabic will ever be written in Latin script in general practice. It didn't spread at first because Greek was already so dominant, then because the catholic church wast spreading into Muslim territories in the middle east, and now because it is not Lingua Franca, languages have settled on the correct scripts, and Christianity isn't spreading in the middle east, same as usual.
