Oh, thank God, I was worried it was going to be something heartbreaking, like the painting was commissioned after the little girl had tragically died from scarlet fever or some such. Everything's fine.

  • Due to two ancestors at unequal levels of generations back, I've got some odd ratio like 3/128 Native American. In practice this means that I don't grow much of a beard and I tan before I burn, and not much else.

  • Someone hovering two inches off the floor:

"Dude, what was in that delicious meringue?"

  • How do we feel about this comics' insinuation that the only safety any of us deserve is that which we can secure through our own personal ability to preserve through violence? By that logic, the pig should have shot the wolf the instant he saw him, and there would be no end to the violence until everyone was equally afraid of everyone else's capacity for violence, or until they re-invented feudalism from first principles, and neither sounds like a great state of affairs to me.

  • What are its properties? Is it merely a phenomenally effective lube? Does it facilitate passage through otherwise magical barriers? What's going on there?

  • If you told me this was the reference mock-up that the ghost of Drew Struzan was going to use to create the real poster, I'd be thrilled.

  • The "doppelganger problem" is really why this is not an easy issue to answer. If someone gets exclusive rights to a specific face, who is to say another person naturally having a similar face isn't being wronged? How close is too close?

At what point is Natalie Portman allowed to sue Keira Knightley?

  • Or even just getting hit in the head by a well-meaning person who reasonably thinks they're trying to prevent a maniac from killing someone in the building.

  • "No, that wasn't a metaphor! The Bible is literal truth!"

"What about 'The land shall not be sold permanently, for the land is Mine; for you are strangers and sojourners with Me,' or 'But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,' or 'Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.'?"

    "Those parts were metaphorical!"

  • Just taking this one example under consideration, maybe the boy has expressed interest in fishing, and the mom knows that this neighbor is into fishing, and she emphatically isn't, and she feels like her son might benefit from that kind of bonding experience.

From a more broad-based perspective, it doesn't have to be a gendered conversation, but for a lot of young people, they look to adults for guidance and for ways to understand and express their gender, and it's healthy and helpful to have an adult that they can pattern their own gender expression off of. I didn't have a lot of present male role models as a young boy, and so I found myself reading and watching a lot of science fiction and asking myself "Is this the kind of thing that Captain Picard would do?" It wasn't a perfect replacement by a long shot, but it was something, and it was something that I didn't even fully realize I was looking for until I went back and looked at my own developing sense of what it was to be a man, much later in adulthood.

Can a child learn healthy gender expression from an adult of any given gender? I don't know, maybe. But I do know that as a boy, I really wanted an adult man to help me construct my own identity, and I went looking for one, without even fully knowing what I was doing or why.

  • Honestly, how the fuck does he even have the power to try to do this? Like, if the president announced he was firing, say, me from my job at the local bookstore, we would laugh and move on with our lives, because he doesn't have that power. And if the president announced he was firing his own chief of staff, sure, that makes sense. But what's with him treating apparently the entire federal apparatus as if it's his own private business and firing people at will, when I should presume there would be an entire multi-level org chart between him and these people that would not give him the power to directly fire them?

  • Call me crazy, but I don't think the president should have the ability to fire all of these supposedly apolitical positions. The president should be walled off from those kind of decisions specifically to prevent the office from being able to hand out positions based on political loyalty and bribes. But maybe I'm just a kooky go nuts crazy guy.
