  • I'm not sure as I don't follow Marvel films, but I did always wonder if racism played a part in his criticism for Altered Carbon. Joel Kinnaman is basically the stereotypical Aryan alpha male actor (in appearance only, of course), so for him to be replaced by shorter black guy is exactly the type of casting choice that would trigger racists. And the second season wasn't as good as the first, but the hate for Mackie was so bizarrely out of line with the okay performance he gave.

  • Wrong thread?

  • Why do people hate this guy so much? It seems like a very large portion of the internet absolutely loves it when projects he is in are review bombed or perform poorly at the box office. Even the phrasing of the title here makes it sound as if it's his film, like he's the producer and wholly responsible for its failure. Isn't he just starring in it?

  • This is still just about hypervisor, the title is just clickbaity to make it sound like something new has come out.

  • This is just a very late report on the hypervisor thing, it sounds like nothing new has been discovered.

  • I watched Columbus last night. Pretty interesting film, it was a debut for the writer/director but you wouldn't know it based on how good it looks. The choice of locations is superb, and it is shot in such a creative and beautiful way that literally every single scene is a joy to watch. The ambitious cinematography is paired with a very minimalist story, a choice reminiscent of Yasujiro Ozu's work.

Just generally, I'd say Columbus takes a very Japanese approach to this type of subject matter with long ASL (average shot length), static camera-work and significant use of short, static transition shots of everyday settings and phenomena that stitch together the longer scenes and create some contemplative breathing space between them. It's very subtle, meticulous film-making that is deeply satisfying and also oddly exciting to watch as someone who loves this type of stuff.

I think it does struggle a little bit on the story side, though. John Cho's character feels secondary and his acting comes across a little wooden in some scenes. The relationship between his character and that of Haley Lu Richardson, who is very good, also feels a little lacking, though that is often the case with this type of film. Not every relationship is long, rich and full of deep meaning. People come into and go from each other's lives and there can often be a sort of transactional feel to relationships outside of our core circle of family and friends, which isn't necessarily a bad thing in this context.

  • The thing I keep wondering is can people not get on with so many multi faceted strong female leads? But then everyone loved Daenerys for some reason, so it can’t be that

However, she was also made an object of sexual desire, both within the show and in the surrounding pop culture, from the very beginning. She went full nude very early on, as opposed to the female leads of House of the Dragon whose sexualisation has been a lot more subtle. Daenerys was also straight and played by a cisgendered woman, as opposed to Rhaenyra who is bisexual and played by a non-binary person.

I don't think all criticism of the show is unfair or bigoted, but the reception has definitely been somewhat influenced by right-wing grifter "reviewer" channels who try to create pile-ons for shows that exhibit feminist and/or non-conservative social themes.

  • He was voted out for being all talk with no policies.

It's almost as if he was a member of a minor party and not not the ruling government...

  • A sad consequence of them retreating to spaces like Lemmy and Bluesky and cocooning themselves from any dissenting opinion.

  • Destabilising the US from within creates domestic pressure that affect its ability to lead on the global stage, creating space and opportunity for aspiring superpowers like Russia and China to influence and shape the world. It also undermines the trust of US allies and partners.

  • Most conspiracy theories have some grain of truth or believable aspect to them, that's part of the reason why people can latch on to them. Trump has a long history of fabricating stories and feeding them to the media to manipulate his public image. However, even if people think it's a credible explanation here, they are overlooking how much more credible the simple explanation is.

  • I'm sorry to be cynical, but it's 100% just Michael Jackson fans rating it a perfect film. You see the same effect for every biopic about a modern pop star (check out the ratings for any K-Pop film, for example).

  • I guess it would be a favourite, probably Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. I watched it countless times during my final year of high school as part of my major literature assignment (in addition to all the other times I've watched it for leisure), so I know it so well at this point that I'm far beyond the "I've seen this too many times, it's boring now" stage. I appreciate every little detail now.

  • For me, the journey is at least equally important, if not more so. People would go on forums and talk about what it could be.

You're right, that's arguably the main reason why these shows are so popular. People love trying to work out the mystery ahead of the final reveal and, compared to more conventional mystery formulas, mystery box gives them so much to work with. You see a lot of creativity in the wild theories fans come up and no one is wrong until the very end. That does mean the ending is super important to the overall reception of the show as a finished product, though. Like I think the journey can be the bit you remember fondly if the ending was sufficient, but if it's underwhelming then it just all feels like a massive waste of time - at least for me.

  • Friendlyjordies is probably having a meltdown with all the positive attention Pocock has been receiving lately.

  • The actual reason, which no one seems willing to admit, is because it's an easier narrative to weaponise against Trump and MAGA. "Yes we are really trying to kill your hero but keep failing" is kind of hard to use in an internet flame war, but "you guys know he's just using this to distract from the Epstein files, right?" is a hook that can work on some Trump supporters, who are often very conspiratorial themselves and quite obsessed with the release of the Epstein stuff. In addition, there's this sort of cognitive dissonance going on here for many people who believe they are on the side of the moral and just, but also condemn violence (including political violence). They can't accept that people from "their side" might actually be trying to commit murder, so instead they look for explanations that can flip it back to the black and white narrative of "we are the good guys and they are the bad guys".

The same thing happened with the Brian Thompson and Charlie Kirk murders. Some people cannot cope with the reality that not everyone on "their side" lines up perfectly with their values, so instead they create and believe in a conspiracy theory that frames them as victims of a right-wing plot to damage their public reputation and imprison their members.

That 3 people in the US, a nation with a long history of extreme gun violence and political assassinations, may have attempted to assassinate the most divisive and dangerous president in the nation's history during a period of extremely toxic and violent political discourse is actually a very rational and logical explanation for the three attempted shootings. Unless your entire identity is bound to this stuff and you simply can't accept the above premise, there is really no reason to go looking for alternative conspiracies to explain what is happening.

  • Supposedly it has an ending planned for the fifth season and I think that would help

If I could believe that "we have an ending planned" means "we have written the entire thing in advance" then this would be reassuring, but with mystery box shows too often it seems to mean that they just have a very general idea of the premise of the show (including the ending). Like they're not completely making it up as they go along, but actually they kinda are because all the points between A and Z are being written between seasons.

The problem with that is that they overcook some of the points between A and Z because they need to have stories and hooks for each season within the broader story structure. You end up with things that feel very important to viewers because they were so prominent within a season, but are not actually considered important by the writers because they wrote these bits as sort of padding around the basic premise. There's this disconnect there between the writers and their audience that I think is a big reason why these types of shows often have unsatisfying endings filled with plot holes and unanswered questions.

  • I just got into season 3 of misfits, and I think I am done. I cannot stand Rudy.

He is a bit different to Nathan as the lead comedic character, but I'd encourage you to keep going into Season 4 to see if he warms on you (I appreciate that's a lot of viewing time if you're really not enjoying it). Back in the day a lot of fans were very upset by Nathan's departure and hated Rudy at first, but he did grow on a lot of people and became one of my favourite characters by the end. I hope you don't consider this major spoilers, but in Season 4 there is a new character introduced who has extremely funny interplay with Rudy (I guess in a similar way to Nathan and Simon). The last couple of seasons are very enjoyable because of those two.

  • I just don't associate her with this type of comedy, nor can I imagine her doing it well. I've only ever seen her do serious drama or, as you say, sort of zany, over the top dark comedy stuff. The White Lotus requires actors that can do a specific type of satire well. They need to be able to play something like a serious role but simultaneously make themselves a comedic figure. Their performance needs to feel like they're taking it seriously while we're all watching from the outside in just laughing at them.
