  • The company’s website claims that its system has a 99.98% accuracy rate

99.98% accuracy of the people it flags as shoplifters or 99.98% accuracy overall? And if the latter then what proportion of the population are even shoplifters? Could you achieve similar levels of "accuracy" by saying nobody is a shoplifter? Maybe throw in a few positives here and there to make it look like your product does something other than harass the public?

  • Sell 64GB and retire early!

  • Which one is which?

  • Wasn't 8.1 basically the same except the start button was back on the taskbar instead of hidden behind a weird gesture?

  • I'm not convinced that's true

  • So ban that user, you don't need to defederate an entire instance over it even if they are an admin (unless they use their admin privileges to circumvent the ban). And they're not even an admin anymore

  • Ah ok, I didn't know that. Definitely need more instances on board for it to be effective in that case otherwise it's just a "you can't fire me I quit" situation

  • I thought they'd decided to refederate? Isn't this just continuing the disagreement for no reason at this point? I'm completely against defederation unless absolutely necessary. The more fragmented it becomes the less the concept of the Fediverse actually exists, and it just becomes a bunch of random websites. The main reason I joined this instance was the lack of defederation and the lack of drama.

I'm not necessarily against the idea of a Fediverse wide boycott of LW if they do keep unnecessarily defederating smaller instances but I'm not convinced we need to have this discussion unless they demonstrate a clear pattern. Also due to their size unless the majority of other instances are on board its going to be completely ineffective.

  • Wikipedia is a good shout. What Linux isos are worth hoarding? I tend to prefer rolling release distros and their isos are usually useful for system rescue, but normally rely on having an internet connection to actually do the install so probably wouldn't be much use in an outage.

  • What sort of stuff do you archive and how do you do it?

  • This is honestly pathetic. If the admins want to have an argument at least leave everyone else out of it. Defederation should be an absolute last resort not your first port of call when someone disagrees with you

  • I accidentally convinced my friend to try CachyOS last week. Despite owning a Steamdeck he didn't know Proton worked outside of SteamOS and was surprised when I said I was playing on Linux (even though I'm sure I mentioned it ages ago). He then decided to give it a go and picked CachyOS himself.

  • And this definitely wasn't an April fools joke considering it was posted on April 1st?

  • Wait what? Wasn't this one of the first projects to oppose the law by updating their license to ban California and Colorado residents? And they've caved already?
