  • This is different stuff, but I must have been tired and having trouble concentrating when I first read it. This clearly says it's for enameled cast iron. It's only in the warnings that they drop the "enameled" part (i.e., "ONLY for use with Cast Iron and Stainless Steel cookware"). Rereading, I begin to think maybe this is intended more as a stain remover than a normal cleaner since you're supposed to use it on a "degreased and dry surface." I have had regular stainless steel pans that never seemed to take a seasoning (can they even season like cast iron?) without being dirty. Because food stuck so badly, they also often appeared stained unless you really scrubbed. So I guess I can see why you might want something like this. Assuming I'm understanding it correctly now.

  • But first they have to catch them

  • I got sick yesterday. Pretty sure it's just a cold because I have a craving for junk food and for some reason that's always one of my symptoms. I actually bought potato chips this last Sunday! I can't help wondering if my body knew, that it was a sign, even though the only really unusual part about it was that I gave in and made the purchase.

  • Where does solar fit in? I'm guessing the movement is quartz, but with power coming from light rather than (only) a battery? Also, and this might be outside the scope, what about mentioning kinetic watches? Many, many years ago, I asked a shop owner about fixing a kinetic watch and he pointedly told me that I had a self-winding watch, not a kinetic one. I assume (hope?) I'm not the only one who's made that mistake.

  • The first four entries in my feed this morning seem to be about being bad at your job. I hope the universe isn't trying to tell me something....

  • This was shortly after we moved in. The cat never adapted and kept himself upstairs in my office and the laundry room. When he made his preference clear, I moved the cat tree up to him.

  • I used to whine and ask my mom why she wanted to watch the news. "It isn't even local! Why does any of this matter?" (We lived in the boonies; none of it was ever going to qualify as local to me.) In college, I subscribed to an international forecasting newsletter for a while, until they finished moving every morsel of information behind a paywall. I'd recently learned about economic globalization and suddenly, local didn't matter--the important stuff was all in the movements of the national players. Now that I'm old, national and international news is too bleak, so I try to avoid it. A local guy is trying to revive a little community newspaper and it shows up in mailbox for free every week or so. I enjoy reading that. I don't even go into the All feed of Lemmy unless my Home feed gets too bare and I need to find more communities to subscribe to.

  • You're right. That's why hickory sticks are in the $15.99 bucket. And don't even think of taking any off the ground outside; we have the police on speed dial.

  • It's like when you finally learn the trick of something you've been practicing for years; it immediately becomes your favorite thing ever and you just do it over and over again, relishing every iteration for the simple reason that you're able to do it. Shame, for him (and his wife), that he never felt like he had really nailed lillies.

  • When enough people know a saying, but don't understand its intent, its meaning drifts. The idea is supposed to be that the existence of an exception proves that there is a rule, with "rule" being in the sense of a generality.

I learned that from the Grammar Girl podcast and found it interesting enough that it stuck with me (because it was something I'd long wondered). Her example is a sign that forbids skateboarding while school is in session. “You can infer that you are allowed to skateboard at other times. The rule that the exception proves is that skateboarding is generally allowed. If that were not a rule, why would exceptions be made at all?"

  • You can be both credentialed and a kook, can't you? I remember him from his regular guest appearances on Art Bell's radio show.

  • I think the answer might be there, but internet searches for the element types didn't yield any hits and the names used in the file are, I feel, open to interpretation and therefore were of no use to me. For example, one element was named "Quest isNull" and set to TRUE. Does it indicate there is no quest attached yet, or that no quest should be generated (presumably because there already is one)?

I saw quest data listed for the item later on, but I suspect it may have been more for the type of quest rather than a specific one. What I took for a quest ID, also showed up for another quest in the file with the same type, but with a description which implied a different source (shared by a trader instead of discovered from a map).

I ended up selling the item. If I get saddled with another, I'll know to keep notes on whether it's given up its secrets or if it's of no further use. Thank you for trying to help.

  • I've checked the item details and no joy: That screen shows fewer details than for any other item type, pretty much just market value, hit points, and beauty

  • I've seen this movie. It doesn't go well for people.

  • That's a good point! This came up in some reading about orthopedic surgeries (which involve a frightening amount of sawing and hammering), however, and so I didn't initially see the other possible interpretation.

  • Just that an in-game answer would be much simpler than learning how save files are structured.

  • Ah, so their advice was just to read it until either the quest is discovered or until it's been so long that it's probably not going to happen (the implication then being that it already has)? Ok, still not an answer I was hoping for.

Other research tasks like the mineral scanner, etc. show progress while the job is being performed, and so I checked the pawn and the item while it was being read when my question first occurred to me. I did not check the full-detail screen for the map, however (if that's what you were suggesting). I'm away from my computer this week, but I'll try that and then searching for the item in the save file.

  • "According to the wiki, there is a chance to discover a quest while reading it; that is, it's not immediate and automatic the first time someone reads it"

Are you saying that this is wrong?
