A human on earth. Ask me about weird tech. Bonus points if it radiates.

  • That is the main purpose behind modern neoliberal turbocapitalist bullshit, yes. Explicitly designed to concentrate wealth.

The intended purpose of market economy is to optimise production. It's a shame that it works only in very limited circumstances with heavy regulation, and only for as long as the ones participating in the market do not influence the regulation.

  • What the fuck, the 300€ chinese off-brand no-name washing machine I bought has been doing its thing for three years and counting now (with the occasional ripped t-shirt or disappeared sock). The only maintenance I have ever done is clean the "filter" (just a small hole somewhere where stuff accumulates) and throw in some machine cleaner it starts smelling. Fair, it does not dry and therefore is mostly an empty box with some pipes and an electric motor, but as someone else said, "electricity costs money, the sun is free".

  • Devices are quite hard to track. Delete cookies, maybe create a new browser profile or use another browser and you're another "device" in their eyes. IP addresses are imperfect as well, because often many people share one IP (families, companies, universities...). And behavior patterns are always a bit fuzzy.

  • But what is the purpose of the market? Some arcane, abstract, paperclip-machine-esque efficiency?

Or rather a short-term optimizer for labour and investments to get people to produce goods and provide services that are in demand and thus keep the lights on and society running?

Because in the latter case, someone providing me with nice chocolate cookies is a feature, not a bug. The system is (somewhat) working, the market is providing me chocolate cookies with reasonable efficiency [1].

[1]: plus some rainforest destruction, but that's another issue that I personally don't believe market economy or, more specifically, capitalism is capable of solving, but this is getting off topic

  • No, machines don't need intelligence to fuck us up. Remember that one famous cold war incident were the Soviet computer (falsely) thought the Americans had launched nukes, and if it wasn't for one brave guy refusing to launch, we would all be dead now?

But I still don't think "AI" by itself is that big of an issue. The biggest problem I see is propaganda, increased automation leading to a class of replaceable, poor workers like at the beginning of the industrial age, and "thinking fatigue" caused by reliance on the bullshit machines.

But actually kill us? Nah. That is still reserved for the classics, like nuclear war, climate change, or maybe some good old-fashioned plague. Who knows, I haven't heard of any major volcanoes lately, too.

Routine does not always help. But being around people helps. Helping other people helps. Even if you recognise that all your efforts are ultimately futile. Think of it this way: we all die at the end, anyway. At the very latest when the sun goes poof, or the universe becomes lukewarm, equally-spaced emptiness. But if you help make someone's life a little bit better, then that is still good. And if we all help to make someone else's life better, then maybe life wouldn't be so miserable.

On the how: join a group that aligns with your values and has people you vibe with, from NGOs like Red Cross or voluntary firefighters, to a soup kitchen, or an animal shelter. Maybe even a political party or movement.

Yeah, do as I say not as I do. I am a coward, lazy, cynic misanthrope myself. But when things become too much, I found this often makes me feel better.

  • The machine uprising is bullshit. Sorry.A few gigabytes of linear algebra are not remotely sentient. It is a remarkable Chinese room, but it is a Chinese room after all.

Behind the bullshit are the usual faces. Rich fuckers, imperialists, egoists, people who want to be praised as living gods while their serfs suffer. History of mankind in a nutshell.

If you want to be scared, be scared about WW3, climate change, ecosystem collapse, that kind of thing. Or even the trivial-ization of propaganda with AI. But the AI is not the issue, we had propaganda telling you your fellow human is an animal before, worked just fine.

What helps? Go out, do things. It feels futile, it probably is, but it helps. Go volunteer, help a political movement, that kind of thing.

  • I know they like to be picky, to separate the "lifestyle hipsters" from the people who really want to become a monk/nun, after all, it is shared living with a lot of other people, so it makes sense to pre-screen a bit harder than your average student dorm. Plus, it is (meant to be) a (mostly) lifetime decision, so them making it hard is probably seen as a favour to weed out the ones that really should not do it.

But other than time, dedication, and maybe no felony record for setting churches on fire, I don't think it is really meant to be "difficult" as in "we only take the best".

  • Uh, my buddy has a few grams left. Although I am more of a Sativa guy myself ;)

  • I believe we could solve all problems with homosexual intercourse. US-Iran war? Gay sex. Russian-Ukraine war? Gay sex. People not getting laid? You won't believe it...

  • Oh, that is cool! I'd probably go for something more fancy, but hey, it does the job.

For antennas, Id probably go with wood or aluminium (depending on what is on hand) and brass tubes from the hardware store. If you want it to be small, a HB9CV ("phased 2 element yagi-uda") is pretty easy, too, and has better directivity than a Yagi of the same size

  • Yeah, good luck.

  • The last thing I heard about Biontech is that the couple founding the company got crazy rich, figured out they don't like being CEOs of a large company, and founded another small research lab with their money.

Besides, it is a private company, sure, they got government grants and funding especially during Corona, but I don't think we should give random companies fucktons of tax money in normal circumstances. At least not while we're doing the whole market economy capitalism thing.

That does not mean that science funding isn't getting cut, I am still a bit salty that it removed my chances of getting a phd. Fighter jets and tanks aren't free, and neither is pissing billions into the wind because you refuse to persecute fraudsters.

  • Maybe. But I am talking about both above the table and more shady government programs. Ever wonder where the guys at Pegasus and friends get their exploits from? They aren't all super great hackers, they buy a lot of stuff, or so I heard. After all, for someone without money, it is a hard decision to be paid a year's wages right now or to go the responsible disclosure route, and potentially get nothing.

And iirc the advertised price for juicy bugs in common platforms and apps was quite substantial. So, according to demand and supply, the price for such exploits was rather high, and is now significantly lower.

  • What, they are coming for EE now? Fuck. I thought I was safe for a while on the basis of "surely they won't have the hallucination machine design and test the multi-million $ project"

  • To be fair, such bugs can easily be worth quite a bit more. If it can indeed automate finding RCEs and similar for everyone with a few $10k, then that's suddenly way more accessible than paying a guy in a basement somewhere a million in shitcoins for that RCE.

  • So, your argument is, some of those groups are actually oppressed, therefore, it is inappropriate to throw in some of the actually oppressed groups in the same bin as obviously non-oppressed ones?

Yeah, that is a fair point, I guess. In retrospect, I should not have done this, if only because it distracts from the original argument, and I can see how it can be read as "look at me, a non-oppressed person, I am soo oppressed". You live and learn, I never had the intention to make this about me, or any group I may be in.

I believe that my original argument, while maybe not exactly presented in the best way, still is valid: blanket statements against a group, any group, are bad. Some are worse than others in the context of how society treats them, sure, I agree with that.

  • My bad, I thought you were arguing in good faith. easy mistake. But apparently I hate queer people now.

The example of me being a straight man does not matter at all. I could have picked any other group. In fact, in retrospect, I probably should, because we are now arguing about straight men, when we should be arguing about how "$group is bad" is a fucked up style of thinking. The solution to a society that is oppressive to some (like homosexual women) is not applying the same rhetoric of oppression and stereotype to groups that are more likely to do that oppression (like heterosexual women).

  • drunk straight women love to SA queer women

That is a very general statement. I really dislike like such blanket statements. Because what is the difference between that and statements like “black people are dumb”, “Mexicans are drug dealers”, or, yes, “straight men are rapists”?

if someone critiques an identity that you are a part of and the critique doesnt apply to you then its probably not about you

If someone critiques a whole identity, they should either make sure that it applies to all or at least the overwhelming majority of that identity, or be prepared to be called a bigot and prejudiced.

To be extremely clear, because I know this is the internet, nuance is dead, and everything has to be black and white and packed for a 10s attention span:

You should critique people. You should point out toxic and hostile behaviour and oppressive social norms. You should, in my humble opinion, never fall into the trap of going from "gay people are bad" to "straight people are bad".

The opposite of a restrictive society that enforces a one-size-fits-all norm (like heterosexuality, or being of $majorityEthnicity) is not an inverse stereotype, it is a free society where people are judged on their actions, not the properties they were born with.
