  • I would welcome a price-subsidized SteamDeck hack kit...

  • Doctor Monkey-for-a-head remembers!

  • Welp. I guess my secret bonus contribution to society is out. I guess all my not-quite-my-kids can find me, now.

  • Very nice!

I'm going to have to proactively update to get some of the wellness features.

This is the kind of stuff that I have to tell my friends "you mean your OS doesn't just do that for you for free?"

I get that some of my power use friends get this level of nice out of Windows and Mac, but they seem to be working a lot harder than I am.

(I do contribute to open source, but I'm fully just along for the ride with Gnome. And loving it!)

  • Yeah. I do think Spyro is a platformer. It's a bunch of things, but I would have a hard time arguing any genre fits it better than platformer.

    Edit: Also, great choice.

  • If I buy a computer on Amazon from a trusted brand like Apple or Lenovo, will they keep my name and address and connect that information to the serial numbers of the computer's parts?

Most retailers don't do this - (edit: specifically they don't correlate a laptop hardware ID like the MAC address with the purchaser. Not because they can't, but because they don't need to. They know most users will log into something that tracks them minutes after they get home. That said yeah, they keep a record of the serial number. But the serial number isn't particularly useful for tracking your online use of the device.)

I'm very wary that Amazon has the most motive and ability to do this (correlate your network chip MAC to your real name) and probably wouldn't tell us if they did start, until long after. Followed by Google in a close second.

That said, a Chromebook accomplishes every kind of tracking the moment I sign into the mandatory Google account, anyway.

Same with any Windows laptop and Microsoft, today.

Edit 2: Lots of devices support rotating network MAC addresses, now, anyway, at least on Android and Linux. If you're concerned, it's worth looking into and setting up, as well.

Would it be wiser to purchase it from a physical store using cash, or a second-hand computer from ebay instead?

    Yes.

  • For those wondering where this landed, Seems he was convicted, and served / is serving his sentence.. Looks like he's at least taking responsibility for his abuse. I respect that he's not trying to gaslight his victim alongside the original abuse, as some in Hollywood have done.

While I understand that he's trying to overcome a shitty childhood, I think it's reasonable that Marvel parted ways.

  • (not my meme, but I'll add) Some missing context - Professor Chang, pictured in the meme - is also shouting at something that clearly isn't gay.

Professor Chang is essentially a continuous uncomfortable non-sequiter of nonsense.

  • Nature loves to make a crab, but once in awhile it makes a tank.

  • Lol. When I retire, I'm going to change all my job titles on social media to "entrepreneur" just to fuck with my friends.

  • Yes. I love the confidently incorrect additional comments explaining in detail how the incorrect code works.

Though I'm usually pretty angry at that point, it is also pretty funny.

  • The twofold reason Cybersecurity professionals always hit the bar early on Friday afternoon:

    1. It's a great example for their sysadmin colleagues.
    2. Easy access to sysadmin colleagues if something goes wrong.
  • "They're up to something. I know it!"

  • Thank you.

  • For most of those devices, it depends what your goals are, but many privacy minded folks consider them unsalvageable.

If you can root the device, you could install the latest compatible version of the Android Open Source Project, and then use your newfound root powers to disable components you don't want, to the extent that the older versions of Android support doing so.

Technically, that's all LineageOS is doing for you. So if you're willing to put the effort in, the device can be salvaged. For most of us, it makes more sense to get a newer device, researching what OS-es are supported.

  • Tensions swelled in the 1980s amid a growing debate over strategy, when the American leadership of the union shifted toward a less aggressive position while the Canadian side wanted to maintain firm pressure on the auto companies.

Correlates with when a lot of Americans bit down hard on the fishhook of Reaganomics.

  • This sure smells like corruption.

This may be literally life of death for some affected persons. A lot of folks in Alaska could die if deprived of a public option for transportation of goods they rely on for survival.

If a private railway is a good capitalist idea, let's let the magic hand of capitalism provide a new separate private line.

Maintaining a public option is common sense economics. The market can add more options, if there's actually real value being missed, but the rest of us can still vote against it with our time and energy when it tries to enshitify.

  • That'll work exactly as well as bribing my two year year old did. And for roughly the same amount of time.

  • Physicians argue cost discussions create logistical burdens,

They find it burdensome to be required to have a short conversation before bankrupting a family. Here's my sympathy for them expressed on the world tiniest violin: .

And yes, they should have to put it in writing. And yes, that costs software development time.

I make software, and I deserve to know what things cost.

So yes, they need to be forced to pay me.

And to be completely transparent, no I won't tell them what it's going to cost in advance. Let's see how they like it. Lol.

Alternatively, we could all go with free public health care, and I'll go write some other software.

    That sounds nicer.
