  • In my opinion both Cinnamon and Plasma are the GOAT, but for new users I think Cinnamon is the best, because from my experience it is trouble-free, and very easy to use, especially for Windows users. I have it on Linux Mint that is installed on one of the family laptops (I use Debian with Plasma myself).

  • What do you mean? I know that Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu LTS these days, that means that it has slightly outdated packages, but for most users that need their computer only for browsing the web and other simple uses, it is fine. You can also install flatpaks.

With Ubuntu I don't think the problems is that is dated (it literally is updated every 6 months), but how buggy it is. I literally tried it out like a year ago, and simple applications like Settings app, were just crashing on me after installation.

  • I see a trend of corporations at least trying to deshittify their products a little.

But I have a theory, that there will be a separate app for Shorts, and nobody will use it, unless it will be pre-installed.

  • I am an agnostic myself, but one thing I can say for sure, that every time one wants me to say that their religion/beliefs are supreme, the more willing I am to convert switch to atheism. Also all organized religions are bullshit.

  • Linux works great as long as the regular user doesn't have root rights. In my opinion if you install Linux on your family's or friends' devices, you never give the root rights, unless you want them to eventually break their system, and you will need to be an administrator for their systems.

Okay another option are immutable distros I guess, but you still can fuck them up easily (probably).

  • Well, the future looks bright enough. We may work to death in captailist states, but at least robots will fight each other, so no need for soldiers.

  • I've phrased myself wrong, I mean that most of them are ultimately based on Konqueror (including WebKit and Chromium-based browsers). Firefox of course doesn't have much to do with Konqueror.

  • By that logic you should call most web browsers Konqueror, because ultimately they all most of them forked from it.

    Edit: Fixed wrong information.

  • Sure, but don't they work just on M1's mostly, and not everything works?

  • So like with any other tech or tool, there are two groups of people... Tale old as the world.

  • Well... I've just checked out, and aside from unofficial Edge flatpak, there are official Debian/Ubuntu and Fedora repositories, I just don't understand why would anyone want to integrate spyware web browser into their system.

  • Mint is great! I use Debian personally, but I really like Linux Mint and Cinnamon desktop. I think it's a great fit for a lot of people who just want normal computer experience. Also there's a misconception that Linux Mint is only for beginners, and while a lot of people migrate to some other distro eventually, staying with Mint is fine even if you want to learn Linux more deeply at some point.

  • Apple actually have shown that they can make cheap computers like Macbook Neo, but I doubt they want to make computers that allow freedom of Linux, hell even Windows. Gaming is also non-existent on Macbooks, because for some they want to use their own graphics API (Metal), although some kind of a translation layer (MoltenVK) exists, but I have no idea how good it is.

  • I sometimes let AI create Turkish flashcards for me... and I just manually retype them for this reason, lol.

And I know AI can sometimes make mistakes, but from my experience, it's not a big deal in language learning, because eventually you will notice it, and who doesn't make mistakes when learning a language anyway?

  • There will be always a workaround, because Windows NT was originally built with local accounts in mind and the whole system's architecture is based on that. Even if they block every possible way to do that using their official installation media, someone will just create a custom disc image, some script or whatever that you will be able to use to have a local account.

  • I think you should let the kid just use variety of systems and desktops over time. It's fine if it likes something different than you in the end as well, and there's a chance that they will like GNOME more if they are more used to mobile UI's.

  • I mean I don't really recommend Linux like a lot of people do. I just mention it when it's appropriate and give a list of its drawbacks and benefits, according to specific use case. For home users I just say that Linux Mint or Zorin OS are fine and even better that Windows for this scenario, but I must be honest and also say that something like ChromeOS might be even better if an user spends their whole time in a web browser.

For professional usage (except coding lol) I never recommend or even mention Linux for variety of reasons.

  • If he will be still alive. He will be in his 80's lol.

  • The whole point of YouTube Premium is that you also support content creators with additional money, and you also get YouTube mobile app without ads. Yes, I know you can use some random methods to not get ads on mobile, but come on, who has time to deal with this shit? And it will break sooner or later.

So YouTube allowed me to buy YouTube Premium Family, and I can't use it for some bullshit arbitrary reason. One more reason to not buy it.
