  • The fact that the Labor government won't do something very popular is evidence that it does not care about the wishes of the Australian people, and that we don't have real democracy in this country.

The cop out of "it's too hard" is tired. If they wanted, they could utilise popular opinion to tell the gas companies to get fucked, and that we'd happily buy and run the infrastructure ourselves, it'd be all the same employees, just minus the middle men. The people are clamoring for some radical reform.

The Labor party is a neo-liberal cente party though, so will never happen.

  • This feels like tinkering around the edges, just to prop up our media monopolies.

Does nothing to address the wholesale theft of art, music and other IP by tech giants via AI.

The internet, in Australia, is a wild west for privacy.

And the government has doubled down on that with age verification...

  • Heck, I hope to be as knowledgeable as you on these things one day.

Now I have no idea which group I met haha

    Thanks for sharing friend.

  • Lobbying. We have to take control of it, and cut the corruption out at the knees.

This is the problem with only doing democracy every 3 years.

Most community orgs are more democratic than our federal parliament, as the membership have the right to recall/vote of no confidence... We don't have that right over our MPs.

We need a complete reinventing of our democratic structures.

  • No worries with Socialist Alliance's GreenLeft, but my knee-jerk reaction to the CPA is that they are, not even embarrassed, Stalinists. Based on reporting and having gone out to the pub with some of them after a protest once.

I may have fighting words with comrades who think a one-party state who "consults with" the working class, and rules for them (their words, not mine).

Nothing wrong with "communists", but the CPA, in my view, and by their own admission (people I met), are maoists and stalinists - and those people hate democracy.

They very seriously told me that while China isn't perfect, it's a government who governs for the people. Which is some hilarious shit If I've ever heard it, considering how China is capitalist as heck and has no popular democracy whatsoever. Even less than us.

There is no socialism without democracy.

Apologies, but I feel very strongly against the CPA. It sucks, because what the common person thinks communism and socialism, is what they're espousing...

Thank Christ they're a tiny org in Australia.

(Maybe there is more than one org calling itself the a Communist Party of Australia???)

  • This is especially fucked because young people are disproportionately working as casuals and are routinely structurally dismissed by not being given shifts

    Thanks for sharing

  • Knowing Jordies, like any Labor hack he'll do some handwaving about how it's "too hard" because of XYZ and say anyone asking for proper taxation and royalties is living in a fantasy, because of the deeply entrenched corporate interests and US imperialism.

Instead of, ya know, doing something about that, we'll just throw in the towel. On a policy that's ridiculously popular...

This is me paraphrasing what he's said in the past about minerals taxes.

  • As much as this is deeply concerning, what exactly can the Australian Federal parliment do beyond making political asylum visas easier to access? Something, I'm told, is pretty difficult to do if you're a Chinese national, as many of these applications are rejected as illegitimate.

Unless we're willing to massively hurt our relationship with China, and lose the large pool of international students who come here to study, there's not really much that will be done about this.

You can bet the universities would lobby to not turn that tap off...

In conclusion, the only people who can fix this is the Chinese people themselves :/

  • Definitely for privacy, but the "more aware of spending" part really depends on the person.

Until it's in my spreadsheet and makes line on graph go down, it doesn't fully register for me, regardless of payment type.

  • If this isn't proof to Labor stooges that their parliamentary party aren't anti-democratic thugs that need to be abandoned, I don't know what will be...

    The party is beyond reform

  • Compared to how much we subsidise roads, this is a drop in the bucket

  • $5,000 in expenses on a standard four-bedroom home

This seems pretty damn reasonable to ensure that the house is built to a good standard...

Even their cherry picked numbers aren't convincing

  • Water definitely should not count, wtf

  • About bloody time. I'm glad that for once there's a semblance of justice

  • It's absurd that a private school receives a single cent of public funding.

Go be private if you're going to be private...

All funding destined for private schools should be redirected to public schools (and more) at rapid pace.

  • For clarity, I'm not saying everyone can not own a car, but most people definitely don't need a yank wank truck, or a car that drives 1000 km in a single go, for the vast, vast, vast majority of their trips.

I think there's a case to be made that if one must have a car, and they have the option of choosing an electric car, they should do that, and in the rare cases they need a car that runs on fuel for range or lack of charging options, just rent one.

I hope you get some more transport options near you soon to tick you over to the car-free life!

  • As someone who doesn't own a car, it's wild to me that people will buy something for the extremely rare times they'll use that feature.

Renting a car for the weekend is a thing, folks...

  • I'm so sorry. Godspeed friend, we're cheering you on around the world. Hope all goes well for you and you loved ones in these particularly trying times

  • When is our government going to have some moral courage?

Sadly, Labor's notionally socialist past is long, long, in the rearview mirror.

Upsetting the gambling industry is liable to get your house firebombed, so it's unsurprising the status-quo "Labor" party isn't gonna do shit to really reign it in.

We're the worst in the world on gambling...
