  • If it was evidence, they fucked up BIG TIME if their actions weren't read-only from the beginning. A distress password would be an attempt at destruction of evidence, but completely unsuccessful.

  • Any chance of using level 1 charging? That would just require a standard wall outlet. Over 8 hours, it would probably give you about 25 miles of range, depending on the details.

    Also, I assume that charger is a level 2. You could probably get 20 miles of range in an hour.

    If you're within spitting distance, you could make up the difference with public charging. Many grocery stores now have DC fast charging, so you could top off on a regular weekly trip.

    TBH, I think you're a much better candidate for a hybrid, or possibly a plug-in hybrid.

  • "up to" is doing A LOT of heavy lifting.

    There is a mountain of difference in solar power that can be collected on June 21 vs December 21. We all know that, there are many more hours in the day. but what many people don't know is that even limited to the same productive hours, let's say 9a-4p, summer light has a lot more power.

    Because it's their own marketing, you can count on "Up to 20 miles per day" meaning 20 miles (in an extremely efficient EV), in the ideal circumstances, on the best day of the year. The rest of the year will be worse, probably much worse.

    But don't take my word for it, and certainly don't take theirs. Wait for independent reviews, and check them. See what people can actually expect from such a system. As much as I would love for this to be a real solution for most people, it's very unlikely.

  • I haven't looked into this specifically, but it's extremely hard to make the numbers work for a solar-powered car with panels the size of the car. The panels just aren't big enough for them to collect enough energy from the sun to make it worthwhile.

    It also looks like in this case, you would need to manually put the panels in place after every trip, and remove them before each one. And that's assuming no concerns about theft or weather damage.

    At best, it's going to be very inconvenient. At worst, it won't help at all and you'll be living on fast chargers.

  • They never refer to it by name, but it's a Corsi–Rosenthal Box. Very easy and cheap to make, but kind of a pain to replace the filters.

  • I appreciate what you're trying to do, but you should look into the numbers. I follow a channel that went through their YouTube earnings a while back. 225k subscribers, long-form (20-30 minutes) videos getting 30k views each.

    He got about $40/video.

    The only way you could make the math work -at all- is if you're already on resistive heat and you only do it during winter. In any other scenario, you'll spend more on electricity than they will get in revenue. Even in this one, it's ignoring things like increased wear for what might not even be pennies of revenue.

    The KARR alarm devices are typically installed by car dealers, not manufacturers or owners, and used as a measure to prevent auto theft from dealer lots. Yet when the cars are sold, the alarms typically aren't removed, even if the buyer declines to pay for it as an additional feature.

    you can check if your car has the device by looking for a KARR sticker on your car's driver-side window—or in some cases a sticker reading, “SWDS” for SouthWest Dealer Services, a subsidiary of Acrisure Protection Group—as well as a small button with a blinking light attached to the underside of your car's dashboard.

    I'm going to guess that these are independent used car dealers, not branded dealers selling new cars.

  • TBH, it makes perfect sense. If you don't want to be subject to the laws of California (or whatever state/city/country), you need to genuinely not be there. This is true as a resident or a business.

    It doesn't surprise me at all that people want the benefits of living in California without the obligations.

  • I assume that's the "weight" of the paper, I.e. how thick the pages are.

  • Birthright citizenship is by no means the standard. It's not rare, but most of the world does not use it. Most of them are in the Americas, but that whole thing gets complicated.

    Most countries grant citizenship to the children of their citizens. IOW, the child inherits citizenship from its parents. If nothing else, the mother is going to be known by nature of the birth, and the child would have at least her citizenship.

    (Exceptions exist, but they exist for Jus Soli as well)

  • I have no firsthand knowledge of the subject, but I would assume they get inserted at the factory as part of QA. How else would they make sure everything works as expected?

  • Generally speaking, it's the amps that you need to be concerned about. That's what requires thicker cables, because amps generate heat (in the form of transmission losses). Higher voltage can actually reduce this, since W=V*A. That's how the latest USB-PD can deliver so much power, by increasing the voltage. It's also why EV fast chargers work faster on 800v batteries. The cables are limited by amperage.

    However, you are correct that the materials would need to be able to handle the higher voltage. If the resistance is too low, it could create arcing, which is really bad.

    Judges have very little patience for either scenario. I suspect there will be more coming on this.

  • Not as much about the car as it does the market. For a variety of reasons, very few people are considering a used EV. Which is a shame, because there are some incredible deals to be had for any potential buyers.

  • The problem with both of those examples is that's where it landed eventually. You're ignoring all of the time that Kia ignored/denied the issue, then the half-assed answers done with only a quarter-ass (The Club, distributed through an unpredictable patchwork of local PDs), and only after several years finally fixed it. Or at least that's what they claim.

    BTW, I don't think they installed physical immobilizers, at least not on all models. It was some sort of software update, but I don't have the details on how it could even work. But at least it came with The Club direct from Kia/the dealer.

    Hyundai/Kia certainly have some selling points, and I would seriously consider the Ioniq for my next car. But we shouldn't pretend that they're beyond reproach. The whole theft problem came from years of them cutting corners. Their response to it showed a level of corporate incompetence that borders on malice. And the cherry on top, the ICCU response mirrors the previous incompetence. From what I've seen, the infotainment software is buggy and unintuitive.

    They still offer a good value for the money, but you may pay for that with time/frustration. Like everything else, we should evaluate it honestly.
