He/him/they

Just a little guy interested in videogames, reading, technology and the environment.

I’m on Telegram - feel free to ask for my details :3

My other account is @OmegaMouse@feddit.uk

  • Just about to finish The Safekeep by Yael van der Wouden. It's been good! Very beautifully written and such a unique setting (post war Netherlands). I've been reading it for my book club.

I'm thinking on starting The Lies of Locke Lamora next. It's been on my TBR for a while!

  • I completed most of the squares! There were some other books I read as part of a book club. So that was somewhat out of my control, and I couldn't find appropriate places for all of them. I'm probably going to finish one more book before the end of May, but again I don't think that will fit anywhere.

Perhaps I could have substituted in some other squares, but I quite liked the challenge of just sticking to the originals.

(For books marked with an asterisk, see diversity stats below)

I was also keeping track of this in a spreadsheet, so here's a nice visual representation. Dark green are hard mode:

I have a ton of books I've bought on offer over the last couple of years, so this was a great way of tackling my TBR in fun way. Many thanks for running it!

Edit: I like what other users have done with favourites and diversity, so I'll add those to my post!

    • Dark Matter by Blake Crouch - couldn't put this one down! Loved the premise and the fast paced writing. It felt a lot like a Black Mirror episode, with some extremely dark implications to the technology.
    • Hijab Butch Blues by Lamya H - I read this as part of my book club. It's about the author's journey through life as a queer Muslim, coming to terms with her sexuality and how it fits with her religion. Each chapter is framed around a story or figure from the Quran. Really beautifully written.
    • Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson - I love the world and magic system in these books, and the second book has really ramped up the pace. So much happened! I can't wait to read the next.
    • Old Man's War by John Scalzi - this was just great fun throughout. Some really fascinating and deeply thought out ideas, without taking itself too seriously.
    • 2 from series I previously enjoyed (Words of Radiance, Brigands & Breadknives)
    • 1 standalone novel from an author I’ve read other works by (Circe)
    • 2 from a new series from an author I’ve read other works by (Dogs of War, Old Man's War)
    • 17 by authors I had no prior experience with (See above books marked by a *)
  • Yeah I thought so too. He seems sweet and I'd meet up just out of interest. Could be a nice friend going forward

  • So when are you meeting him? :3

  • What?

  • I guess so! So parents showing their children content with gay relationships will have no effect on them besides making them more tolerant and accepting

Though no doubt sadly that's something certain parents would rather avoid :(

  • Whoa this looks great! Downloading the demo later for sure

  • Having the animated montage on the TV is really effective lol

Weirdly despite all the straight romance that was forced on me growing up, I still ended up gay :3

  • I have a pair of work shoes that I leave under my desk in the office to change into, so sometimes I'll briefly walk around the office in socks if I get distracted midway through that process. And yeah I guess that feels a bit weird?

But anywhere else (in my house, a friend's or family member's house) I take my shoes off at the door, so walking around in socks feels normal.

I've never experienced not being able to walk properly like that though!

  • Speaking of gay, I saw a meme the other day comparing the Gulf of Oman to the anus and the strait to the second sphincter. Something along the lines of 'if you get water past here you'll be douching for hours' lol. If anyone can find it let me know. Wish I'd saved it

  • We can share if you want! Can't beat the crunch of a nice ripe banana 😋

  • Mildly Interesting @lemmy.world

I found this ancient banana under my kitchen shelves

  • Headlights need some adjustment lmao

  • If you're a fan of his, perhaps you can provide more detail? Looking through his channel does seem to suggest that he's against the inclusion of 'identity politics' in films/TV

  • I hope they decide to bring it back for GTA VI. Surely the current generation of consoles could handle it... though I suppose it may depend on what the devs want to prioritise - graphics or physics. I miss the fluidity of GTA IV!

  • Oh GTA V used the same physics system (Euphoria) - I think it was just a developer choice to dial it back a bit. Was that related to performance in some way? Potentially. GTA IV had a feeling of the NPC physics being 'always on' - you could shove into other characters and they'd stumble and fall. Whereas GTA V (and the Red Dead games I believe), the character physics only seemed to trigger when you punched, shot or ran over an NPC. It's a shame, as I loved messing with that engine in a 'non-violent' way xD

  • Yeah, I loved that aspect! Trying to escape from a chase with the car half caved in, full of bullet holes. The driving was so fun.
