  • Explanation: In 1918, Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie offered 2,000 troops to assist France in WW1, which the French Prime Minister wished to accept.

    Italy said no.

Unwilling to start a diplomatic row with a major ally (Italy) over 2,000 troops, France declined to press the matter further, resulting in Ethiopia's continued formal neutrality in WW1.

Italy had colonial designs on Ethiopia, and didn't want Ethiopia to end up too-integrated into the post-war world order, as that would make their colonial designs harder to execute. France, for its part, supported Ethiopia's post-war accession to the League of Nations, and Ethiopia would be the only independent African country which was a part of the short-lived League.

  • This rabbit hole just keeps going deeper and deeper... what else have they been hiding from us!? Next they'll tell us the Founding Fathers read political philosophy and other nerd shit instead of being divinely inspired 😭

  • Explanation: People and cultures can become very attached to their symbolism, and attempt to overlay it everywhere they can. Both China and Europe traditionally valued depictions of lions for their symbolism.

... on the left is a particularly infamously poor taxidermy of a lion from Europe. And on the right is a toy dog, of which various ancient breeds have acquired variations of the name 'lion dog' in Chinese because of their supposed resemblance to lions, such as the Shih Tzu

  • Explanation: The forerunner to the CIA, the OSS, made various mock-ups in 1944 of what Hitler might look like if he tried to escape incognito before WW2 ended. Hitler, however, would end up shooting himself in a bunker and his body captured by the Soviets in 1945.

Many Nazis escaped through various means, however, with Argentina being a prominent destination due to the fascist-sympathizing dictator in charge of Argentina at the time. For this reason, far-fetched conspiracies about Hitler's escape still make the rounds in fringe circles.

Here, the actor who played Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Ian McKellen, is shown in an old 1980s tv movie... playing HITLER HIMSELF. Coincidence? I think NOT!

  • Explanation: Louis XIV, the "Sun-King", was the king of France who most successfully implemented an 'absolutist' regime, wherein all the aristocrats and nobles scraped and simpered before the all-powerful king of France.

Louis XV, his son, was somewhat less terrifyingly competent, but because of the power accumulated by the French crown, still was not meaningfully challenged by the aristocracy.

Louis XVI, his grandson, was a total incompetent who didn't really want to rule, but didn't want to give up his God-given power either. For that reason, he and the parasitic aristocracy eventually got the chop-chop from Madam Guillotine during the French Revolution, abolishing the monarchy of France.
