  • This is a tangent, but I've noticed more and more people using what I'd consider the noun form of "estimate" as a verb. Even on bbc radio 4 news the other day. Irritates me an unreasonable amount

  • Well at least you'll have had a good sleep before the heat kicked in then!

  • Real talk: is this a legit sign of adhd (ie if you relate to this should you start gathering evidence from other data points?) My wife and majority of my friends from my 20s have been diagnosed in the last few years as adults, as well as my elder daughter (and the younger one literally can't hear if she's reading, so i have my suspicions...)

And then this is literally me irl...

  • Maybe I'm not perfect, but I think it starts to get into the idea that the distinction between plants and animals isn't as clear cut as people imagine it's well worth it in the long run.

Up until 'imagine', I think this was just word for word from another comment i made on lemmy before. Weird app-specific autocorrect?

  • The network capacity is the main constraint, needs crazy reinforcement to deal with more decentralised generation at the same time as power demand is roughly going to double by 2050 (not long in terms of major infrastructure projects).

And that was all before AI data centres.

  • I've heard if you take certain hallucinogens you can...

  • Voltage at the generation end is limited by the practical limits of insulating the windings (coils of wire in the generator that need to be close together but insulated from each other), usually top out about 25 kV for steam or gas turbines. This would usually be stepped up to 275 kV or 400 kV for long distance transmission, then back down to 33 kV for local distribution (at least in the UK).

Different solar panels generate different voltages, also depends on how they're wired together. Not sure what the big solar parks use, but much lower than a fossil fuel plant for sure. That's DC, so needs converted to AC and stepped up for transmission. Some smaller solar farms are connected straight into distribution networks.

Both power transformers and DC/AC converters do give off a bit of a hum at 50/60 Hz, but again shouldn't be anywhere close to the noise of a FF plant.

  • division and subtraction are just syntactic flavor for multiplication and addition

Can you tell me a bit more about how you mean this? I searched a bit but only basic primary school level resources about the relationship between addition and subtraction came up.

Do you mean like subtraction is just adding a negative number, and division is just multiplication by the inverse of a number? In that case I don’t really see how it simplifies things much because negatives and inverses still need as much definition. Or are you talking about bit-wise operations like a computer would use to do these things?

  • I'm not saying this MacAllen is an escape of this, but there are plenty of people who buy and keep whiskey as an investment asset, and it can be pretty reliable by all accounts. So I guess it could be 'worth' 27k in some sense, just not to drink it. The most expensive whiskey I tried was I think £1000 bottle (sample at a whiskey festival, I didn't buy it), and it just tasted like pencil sharpenings to me.

  • Every year this journey is symbolically re-enacted by participants in the Paris-Dakkar rally.

  • Yes in a way, but so much more! A macaroni pie is macaroni cheese filling in a pastry case (usually a single serving size that fits comfortably in a hand). Pie and roll is a delightfully Scottish way of eating a pie. You get a pie, and a buttered bread roll, and you put the pie in the roll, maybe with a bit of sauce (we enjoy red sauce and brown sauce in Scotland), and let nature take it's course.

  • Redundant carbs is the cornerstone of British working class food culture. The pinnacle of this practice is the legendary glaswegian macaroni pie on a roll.

  • I find this very insightful, and not a message i often see being spread about.
