  • Nah. It's OK. It wasn't harsh. It was direct. It was a slap to the face that I needed. I was being lazy and making my education someone else's problem. I am self aware enough to see when I've made a mistake, most of the time, and though my intentions were good, it's really not anyone else's job to educate me. I also hadn't considered that the "lived experience" I was asking for could be traumatic to recall and relay. Like I said, I was being lazy. I make mistakes. I try to learn from them and be better.

  • I can respect that. I would suggest blocking the users that post the stuff you don't want to see. I would prefer, though, that you educate me about why and how these artists are offensive to you. I can be a better ally if I understand. You gain nothing if I'm kept ignorant just because you say so. I also understand that you're probably tired of having to defend yourself and explain yourself over and over again. I would guess that there's an existential fatigue just trying to live in a society that seems to be offended by your very existence. I'm sorry. I try to call it out when I see it, but I don't see it as often as I should and I think that hiding it, even comic strips, doesn't help me to understand better. I need you, with lived experience, to point it out to me so I know what to look for.

  • Right... But we're talking about comic strips, not about slowing the march of the third reich.

    Education is better than censorship. Let the comics get posted, then start the conversation in the comment section about why and how this comic, or artist, is oppressing minorities so that we can make up our own minds. Education is the weapon against oppression, not ignorance.

    If you're so arrogant to think that you can make that decision for me then I'm going to resist you. If you take away my freedom to choose then you're just swapping out one form of oppression for another.

  • I would prefer that the content is not censored by someone else's moral compass. If it's content by a transphobic or otherwise bigoted artist then let us know in the comments. Book burning is bad, no matter who is doing the burning. I would prefer to be educated than have someone else determine what is appropriate for me to view.

    TL:DR I'm an adult: I'd rather choose for myself.

  • I'm a 49 y.o. male.

    I hated Justin Bieber in the 2000s. I still do. Taylor Swift is OK, but not really my cup of tea. I'm not a fan of BTS, but if it works for them, then more power to them! I am into the marvel superheroes, up to Endgame. Everything after that has seemed like over-saturation and I haven't really watched any except the spiderman movie/s. The DC universe is mostly good. The Nolan batman movies were great, as was Wonder Woman. The rest have been a bit average, though.

    But Twilight... Really? I'm definitely team Edward. Why would you want to be a werewolf with a lifespan of 90-odd years when you could live forever? I watch the movies a couple of times a year. I've read all of the books. The only thing I'm ever critical of is the weird, uncanny-valley, cgi baby they jammed into the movies... And 'Renesmee' is the stupidest name I've ever heard (apologies to any Renesmees out there, but it's just awful).

    Anyway, my point is that you shouldn't generalise like that, it makes you sound... Well... Like someone who hated Justin Bieber in the 2000s. Hating on any demographic makes you a bigot, too.

    If there is someone that puts you down for what you like, then surround yourself with better people.

  • The Accountant and Jack Ryan. Ben Affleck and John Krascinski as their respective characters operating in the same universe would be cool. I think they would be an awesome pairing.

  • Been training for about 6 months. I've never run a race before but I run my first 8K on Saturday. I'm nervous and excited about it.

    1. It's a bit of a trope, by now, but, nothing new on race day! No new shoes, socks, shorts, shirts, foods, etc. Do the same as you do on training day.

    2. Pee as late as you can before the start. A nervous wee before the race can save you queuing up mid-race.

    3. Ignore the pace of crowd. Make your first km your slowest. It will set you up for a strong finish.

    4. Look around. Enjoy the sights. Say hi to your fellow runners: there are some amazing people out there and a good conversation can help you go the distance.

  • My family are shit. I don't think any of them even remembered it was my 18th. I invited some friends over to the flat I was staying at and we played cricket in the carpark, then drank beers for a couple of hours.

  • What's your most unbelievable (but true) personal story?

  • Years ago I worked in an inner city market. I had made friends with a person at one of the nearby market stalls. We spoke almost every day. She was an actress working at the market between acting jobs. I had never seen anything she was in, but it didn't matter. She was just really sweet and easy to talk to.

    For unrelated reasons, my girlfriend and I broke up and I moved to the other side of the city on very short notice, to my brother's house, and didn't have the chance to say goodbye to my friend.

    My brother and I were watching TV a couple of months later and there's my friend from the market, introduced on a popular TV show as the new season 2 "token annoying character" (think 2000's, trendy, weekly drama).

    "That's name of my friend. She's my friend. We used to chat every day!" My brother scoffed and called me a liar "just because we live out in the suburbs, don't think you city folk can make us believe any old bullshit story!"

    Two weeks later she happened to go to my brothers' workplace for car parts and he recognised her: "My brother reckons he knows you." Friend: "What's your brother's name?" Brother: "SkaraBr..." Friend: "What? Where is he? Is he okay? I've been so worried. Do you have his number?"

    Good lad, my brother, wouldn't give out my number, even to a TV actress, but she made him call me right then and there so that she could talk to me.

    Twenty years later and I still laugh about that phone call and the sound of his voice when he said "she wants to talk to you".

  • Australia: The Homo Sapiens Cognitus Plummetus, or Drop-Bigfoot, larger cousin of the drop-bear (Thylarctus Plummetus). They're rarer than the drop-bear because they're so easy to see due to their size that they have been hunted to almost-extinction. The last remaining specimens are only found in high, rocky, mountainous areas where they can hunt from the protection of cliff overhangs and large rocks.

  • Gatekeeping. Anyone who tells you that "that's not how it's done" or " we don't do it that way" or otherwise cramps your style just because they do it differently, or better, or with more expensive tools or materials, is an arse.

    I have been put off so many hobbies because other people just have to suck the enjoyment out of it. Now that I am older and more sure of myself, I tend not to join the communities related to my hobbies because people are dicks; I just do what I enjoy, how I enjoy it.
