  • East of Eden by John Steinbeck.

It is a bit lengthy, but it seems like each interaction is written around pithy wisdoms interwoven into the lives of interactions of the characters.

Each time it happens, it's like stumbling upon on a gemstone by a river, and keeps me anticipating the next unfolding of the plot.

  • Colbert Report was a pointed jab, and obvious satire. King of the Hill almost had a loving admiration in it, without the implied harsh critique or judgement that satire normally holds.

  • Having moved from an urban to a rural area, I can anecdotally say there is more to it than just education (though that certainly may be a factor).

Universities scare the conservative faction because they think they are hotbeds of indoctrination, but in reality, the openness people and new ideas occurs largely through socialization, not from any curriculum.

Rural areas rarely encounter that degree of interaction with that variety of backgrounds and beliefs. It is embarrassing to be ignorant of the outside world when you are socialized with so many people that seem to know more than you.

Once your mind is open to the wider world, a lot of the smaller beliefs have to be shed. I believe that is one of the reasons that one of the strongest variables associated with political persuasion is a university education.

It's socialization, not indoctrination, and not just a matter of education.

  • For shits and giggles, from the 'before times':

Here's the thing. You said a "jackdaw is a crow." Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that. As someone who is a scientist who studies crows, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls jackdaws crows. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing. If you're saying "crow family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Corvidae, which includes things from nutcrackers to blue jays to ravens. So your reasoning for calling a jackdaw a crow is because random people "call the black ones crows?" Let's get grackles and blackbirds in there, then, too. Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A jackdaw is a jackdaw and a member of the crow family. But that's not what you said. You said a jackdaw is a crow, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the crow family crows, which means you'd call blue jays, ravens, and other birds crows, too. Which you said you don't. It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

  • Tunick’s case also raises ongoing questions about what constitutional rights can be invoked at the border, which the U.S. government has long asserted is not U.S. soil until a person is authorized to enter.

So do the laws apply at the border or not? If he has no constitutional rights because he's supposedly not on U.S. soil, then he couldn't be breaking U.S. law, since he technically isn't there...

  • The responses I received were exponentially more helpful than scouring for the information myself (which I had done).

Everyone here had experience and expertise that I did not, and I had a working solution running on my computer within 10 minutes of asking.

Part of the purpose of a community like this is evident in posts like this.

Your response, though funny, is damaging to the community, and unhelpful at best.

I understand where you were coming from, but please don't.

  • This is how I would have done it in 2001.

It is my understanding that the only reason to go this route in this day and age is if you prefer to survive off the tears of cybersecurity professionals.

  • I'm sold! Setting it up now!

  • Any suggestions on where to start when looking into buying and setting up a domain?

  • As averse as I am to spending money on subscription services, having my own domain for less than 30 bucks a year might be worth it.

I think I'm going to try out the tailscale VPN route first before I fully warm up to buying a domain.

*Edit-You've definitely got me sold on getting a domain! Thank you so much for all the info!
