  • All good...unfortunately, it looks like they have a good chance of getting back in.

  • There is a bit much.

    The highlights:

    • My biggest gripe; the use of urgency to ram through unpopular legislation without the usual checks and balances. Leading to all kinds of bad laws.
      • None of the "urgent" legislation met the definition for use of urgency, but it turns out there are no protections around its use, just guidelines that haven't been breached before.
    • When the new govt was formed, they came in a cancelled a bunch of stuff that the previous govt did, some was utterly moronic. It cost us a lot of money and time.
    • Cancelled world leading anti-smoking legislation; which has just been made law in the UK.
    • Fucked up the school lunch system for kids in need; it still isn't fully sorted 2 years later.
    • Implemented austerity to such a degree that the nascent economic recovery was reversed and we are in a real-wage recession but even though there is "growth" happening
    • Fucking up the education system; basically re-writing the curriculum to hearken back to the 1950-1980's style, that goes against a lot of the bet evidence; in this they ignored an open letter from the college of teachers calling to not put this in....the new curriculum is just filtering in to schools now.
    • The fast track legislation; rammed through with urgency. This has been opined using "fast track to corruption"; basically it allows the minister to bypass the normal consenting process to allow "significant" projects to go ahead...now projects that had been previously blocked on environmental or other grounds are coming back and getting through.

There are a lot more smaller things; but basically NZ is limping along waiting for the election this year and hoping for change....that may not come because the other major party is fairly meh.

  • Our current PM has terrible poll numbers....it is mainly because the current crop is fucking things up all over the place, and he is rightfully taking the flack.

I was jokingly saying maybe he needs a fake assignation to bump his numbers.

I know America has to be the biggest and best....but other countries have leaders that are fuckups also.

  • That is some gold plated memeing work there.

    Bravo!

  • From their FAQ:

Do you support WhatsApp, Messenger and Signal?

Yes we do! These also work with push notifications via MicroG or Google Play Services to ensure you get instant updates!

  • This soccer playing robot isn't much of a threat, it can be equalled by an elite player with years of experience.

  • We are at least on the map..... Just ignored.

  • Oh yes, we had this on our books.... Then the current bunch of cunts (not the good kind); removed it to make more tax money. Absolute idiocy!

We had world leading legislation, but duck the future generations aye.

  • Not much detail in the article

Kuwait has declared force majeure on shipments of crude oil ‌and refined products after a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz prevented some vessels from entering the Persian Gulf, hindering its ability to meet certain customer commitments, Bloomberg News reported on Monday, citing a document. State-run Kuwait Petroleum Corp. notified customers on ‌Friday that it was invoking a contract clause allowing it to withhold scheduled deliveries, the report said.

It added that the decision is not expected to result in a complete halt in supply. Reuters could not independently verify the report.

  • Fire, the wheel and the printing press, would be my top three.

But the modern world is all about the manipulation of electromagnetism.

  • Whilst the industrial revolution started with mechanical power; the harnessing of steam essentially. The modern world owes everything to the mastery of the electron and the photon, and more generally the exquisite control of electromagnetism.

The manipulation of electrons enables the iPhone; touted as the possible pinnacle of achievement; basically every industrial process on the planet is monitored and controlled by electromagnetic means.

Our true highest achievement is the ongoing development of the control of electromagnetic phenomena; we bend electrons and photons to our will, manipulate matter on the smallest scales using these forces, measure the bending of the fabric of reality, and probe the secrets of the universe. The iPhone is but one small aspect of this continuum of knowledge.

  • President Camacho; chose the smartest person in the world to replace him; thereby showing an empathy and level of intelligence sadly lacking in the real world.

  • Maybe.

But using nuance and constructive statements is more difficult than hard line rhetoric. People gravitate to stupid slogans and simple absolute language; it is though killing and destructive to actual conversation.

In the example "it is NEVER unethical to steal food"; this isn't a real position to take; it is grandstanding and shallow; this argument falls at the first hurdle.

Saying something like:"Theft of food; whilst not necessarily unethical; could be at best morally neutral. The specifics of each situation need be weighed on their merits. Where a person is taking food to feed their family, and the theft doesn't materially affect the owner of the food, such as a large supermarket chain; this act is not unethical."Is not a pithy and hard hitting as the stupid statement "It is never unethical to steal food. It is unethical to stop someone from stealing food, or report someone for stealing food, or to arrest someone for stealing food."

  • Indeed, but the absolute statement can be so easily twisted to meet the ends of moment, it really matters little.

Who says that the homeless person isn't off taking a shit, their food unattended, thus back to stealing rather than robbing!

  • I'll going to steal food from a homeless person, they are too weak to fight back, ethically I'm fine, it is NEVER unethical to steal food.

  • "Never" and "always" are very difficult to use in a philosophical argument.

I can come up with a single ridiculous example that refutes a statement that uses such absolutes, once done the argument falls apart.

  • 7yo with some avocado on fork: Dad, would you rather eat avocado or McDonalds?

    Me: Hmmm, avocado.

7yo: me too, Mcdonalds would be all concrete and metal.

    Me: LOL, well played.

  • ...and it isn't 100:1, its around 2,000,000:1
