  • The entire academic publishing system needs to collapse to make way for something better.

  • This may be an option for emissions free vehicles that don’t have the space or payload for a big heavy battery. It could also be used for high torque applications where an electric motor and its battery would be very expensive and heavy, as stated in the article.

  • I was pursuing computer science back in 2003 in community college. I walked away from it for a few reasons. First it looked like programming jobs would all be outsourced to India. Second, several notable viruses were programmed by teenagers (MSBlast), and Google was hiring people without degrees. It just seemed like my four year degree would not land me a job - I needed to be gifted in ways I already wasn’t.

Obviously, all of that was wrong. I could have made a killing if I stayed with it, especially since I live in proximity to Silicon Valley. But I will never know. I could have been miserable and bouncing between tech bro Web 3.0 startups.

I don’t have the exact quote in front of me but at the beginning or end of Learn Python the Hard Way, Zed Shaw talks about how in technology industries, skilled programmers are a dime a dozen, but in any other industry those who can leverage programming are adept tech ninja gods who are well respected and valued. I have found that to be true in my experience for what it’s worth. I still enjoy programming and it sets me apart from many of my peers. If I was programming 40+ hours per week I’m not sure I would enjoy it. In other words: it’s not about the tool but what you do with it that matters.

Your parents may or may not be correct. But it wouldn’t hurt for you to expand your horizons. Nobody can take programming away from you. Maybe you’ll work on new 3d printers or drones or mechanical engineering or some other interest that you haven’t yet found.

  • It depends on the hotel but one strategy I’ve found is to tell them you didn’t drive or aren’t parked there as a bold face lie. They can barely pay staff to clean the rooms and they don’t patrol the parking lot. If they erroneously tow a guest or employee who forgot their permit or mid-remembered their license plate that would be really bad for them - it’s not worth the risk.

  • Not much substance to this article. But it is noteworthy that the trees also increased precipitation for their own benefit. The bluish haze you see as trees fade away toward the horizon is from compounds they release that act as nuclei for rain drops - yes forests do their own cloud seeding. You know who else has really messed up their water cycle? California, or probably most of the western states. Anyway.

  • Working dogs are bred for fitness at their task. Many of these breeds are now neurotic because they are without duty over many generations.

I’m sure there are still plenty of good working dog breeders on farms. But, I honestly don’t know who in the world is breeding dogs fit for house pets. Some of the Victorian era breeds had that goal, but have since drifted into… problems.

  • But was the dog 18 years old?

  • Because of the adopt-first movement, backyard and pedigree breeders are all that’s left in the US.

  • I’m still waiting for a MacBook/iPad hybrid.

  • OP said “I don’t like drinking water” and my response to that is, then don’t. No reason to force a habit. Could even be risky to just follow the advice of somebody on the internet.

Grand Canyon EMS responded to 474 nonfatal and 6 fatal HRI cases, with the majority (84%) being US residents, 29% from Western states. Of the nonfatal cases, 51% were women, the median age was 43 years (range, 11–83 years), and 18% reported a cardiovascular condition. Clinical HRI assessments included dehydration (25%), heat exhaustion (23%), and suspected hyponatremia (19%).

    Reference

Hyponatremia was found to be almost as common as dehydration at the Grand Canyon. It is not a rare condition. It is very important to bring salty snacks when hiking in the heat. As important as bringing water.

Most people don’t drink enough water maybe, but most people also eat loads of sodium from ultra processed food, many times what the body needs.

Anyway there are many perfectly healthy people who drink very little water. There are also people who drink their own urine. Don’t worry about it.

  • We don’t know OPs diet. All we know is that OP feels some kind of societal pressure to drink more than they want to. Nobody should do that. We should consume the amount that feels right and it’s as simple as that. Those who consume a high fat diet, or are overweight may have plenty of metabolic water through fat.

Water pushers are just as wrong as I am. Hyponatraemia can be fatal and it can have similar symptoms to heat exhaustion, leading people to chug more water. The only safe advice for water is to drink what feels right.

  • Don’t. Drinking water with meals dilutes your stomach acid. Just eat less processed food and less salt and you’ll barely need to drink any water. Cooked vegetables and fruit are both mostly water.

Only time you need to drink water is when exercising outdoors for extended periods, and even then it’s about 3-4 liters per day (including food).

Also despite a lot of bogus advice out there, coffee is water, beer is 94% water. I have gone months with only coffee and beer and it’s not a problem.

Finally that brings us to kidney stones. Avoid high oxalate foods, and if you are worried about stones drink lemon water or other acidic beverages, as it dissolves stones better than plain water.

Chronic mild dehydration is not a disease and it does not need treatment. I am not a doctor, and this is not medical advice.

Drink when you’re thirsty. Water or any other liquid other than soda pop. You’ll probably be fine.

  • Functions are somewhat useful in VBA although learning LAMBDA in cell formulas (and named ranges) would probably serve you better at this time.

So instead I would say focus on writing a Sub. The one I used for myself students was to turn the current selection into a checkerboard by resizing column width to 2 and coloring every other square black (or any color).

  • They already made it - called the Apple TV. They should make a $200-$400 mini PC with no fans. You can choose tvOS or macOS, and either way it makes an awesome gaming console with 4 forward usb-c ports. They’ve done alright with mobile gaming and they could really make a dent in the console market if they tried. Aside from that it would be a great home server or even a desktop PC.

  • In early engineering storm water was a problem that you want to drain as quickly as possible - so the solution was to pave everything including the creeks. Through many urban floods it has been recognized that infiltration into soil is the best solution for pollutants, flooding, and groundwater recharge. But we still have millions of acres of hardscape that needs to be re-designed to soak into the ground and only overflow if necessary.

But that said a lot of cocaine could enter natural waters directly by being illegally trafficked in boats, drones, or planes that crash. The real problem here is the war on drugs - cocaine was once available at every corner drug store. No illegal trafficking, no pollution.

  • Tradeoff of using a phone with a Lemmy app.

  • My apologies for the downvote. The article used their instead of there and it’s quite a terrible website in terms of ads. Not a lot of substance to the article I regret my click.

  • I think it’s made me more flexible with time in general. But yeah stoplights and traffic matter more than how you drive. It’s futile to think you can go any faster, just enjoy the ride.

  • About 15 years ago I decided not to be in a hurry when I’m driving, and also to not get frustrated with any other drivers. I just figured I’m gonna be spending too much time of my life in a car I might as well not be getting upset about it. For aggressive drivers I make up a story about how they have explosive diarrhea or something else urgent to attend to. It has made a profound and permanent improvement to my life. Would recommend to a friend.
