  • Yeah you’re right, the main goal of science and the math we use for science is to model the universe. That model is completely subjective. The more we learn about the universe, the more the model changes. The way we learn is limited by our 5 senses and our mental models for the immediate universe around us.

    That model is something of a language itself, and if a language is subjectively limited then I don’t think it can be universal

  • I think it’s funny to think of mathematics as a universal language because all of formal logic is built on the assumption that binary truth values are grounded in reality, but I believe that has yet to be proven. All of human communication functions based on an assumed shared context.

    If I say I have an apple, and you say you have an apple, humans would say that together we have two apples but in reality we each have an estimated collection of matter that shares nothing physically in common with the other. Maybe other intelligent life forms don’t make the same assumptions that we do that lead to the statement that there are two “apples,” and maybe mathematics isn’t universal.

    I guess I mean to say that formal logic and mathematics are not grounded in reality, but are grounded in the way that a human brain perceives reality.

  • I have yet to complete a Super Helldive and get out alive on a hive world lol.

    Honestly the game was feeling a little too easy 2 weeks ago so I’m happy that “Super Helldive” is living up to its name.

    Also I don’t think I could’ve enjoyed my first encounter with a hive lord more. A week ago I solo-dropped into a mission and couldn’t even make it to the tunnels before the ground tossed me into the air, then a skyscraper popped up and flattened me. It was exactly as terrifying and intimidating as it should have been and I could do jack shit about it because I didn’t bring any heavy air support strategems. Eventually more divers joined me in my struggle to survive and we managed to hang on for a few more minutes before we officially failed. Talk about a cinematic game. That was horrible and terrific and awesome and the fucking most difficult enemy I have ever seen in any PvE game. I’ve fought similarly enormous worms in Dead Space, Mass Effect, and God of War and beaten them as just a dude with a gun. I know there’s no chance of that in this game and I love it. Helldivers never die!!!

    You underestimate the desperation in this country and the lack of social support networks and the amount that that would devastate so many working class people within a week.

    Let alone how difficult it is to organize that without interference or sabotage

  • Sinners - Irish Demonization?

  • I should preface this by saying I am not Irish nor black nor brown so take anything I say about race and disparaged people groups with that in mind (read: I have no authority to speak on this).

    From my perspective it seemed like the fact that the vampire was Irish was purely a vehicle to make the point that while Irish people have historically been oppressed, there's still a stark difference between life for the Irish in America, and life for black people in America. I think that point was clearly made during the introduction to the vampire when he was being chased by natives who already knew that he was a vampire, but even so the klansmen trusted the vampire over the non-white people and didn't turn him over.

    I also don't think they were punching down on Irish people by writing one character as both a vampire and an Irishman. I don't think that fits into any pre-existing stereotypes. I think it would be a slightly different story if he were an alcoholic or something like that. Furthermore, it didn't seem like anything about him being Irish was demonized. He did an Irish jig but to me that seemed like it was just the way that he would've known to dance when he was excited.

    I dunno, that's just my thoughts that are probably worth nothing. I thought the entire movie was about the development of American popular music, and how white people would act like leeches (blood suckers) around black culture in order to make money off of them.
