  • There is one of those motivational stories that goes something like this:

two twin brothers that grew up together with the same upbringing, have lead vastly different lives, one become a wife beater and acholoic with no job like his father and another become a successful man. Its meant to show that people can choose their future despite where they came from.

But, the difference between the twins had to have been caused by something, otherwise there is no free will, but if it was caused by something, then it was something outside their control, and your back at square one.

Free will is a paradoxical concept, it necessities that there is some mysterious force inside people's mind that we can never see or explain that guides their decisions, that is influence but directly effect by the environment.

individuals make decisions that they themselves would never have prediced they would make

Most of my decisions I never predicted even with my current believe. But I can explain and see where most of my actions came from.

Not being able to see the future 100% isn't prove that free will exist. I have been baffled some of choice of people around, sometimes for good and sometimes for bad.

A person has no more free will than a rock because both are governed by the most important rule of the universe, cause and effect.

Of course none of this is important really, like I said I still go through like there is still is free will. It just all interesting to think about

  • What most people think of as free will "the ability to make a choice" is very obviously real.

I dont think so, everything I have or will ever do is something that has been set in motion long before I was ever born. Most people understand this on the macro level, where you were born, where you go to school/life, your nationality and even stuff like what you choose to do for living.

What I am arguing that it's all predetermined, that yes which hand you choose to raise is not a choice your making but the dominio effect of the entire universe, that you choosing to use your hand as example is not a choose, that your believe in free will is not a choose as much as my lack of believe in it isn't my choice. How you worded that, the language you used, you seeing and reply to this post, the platform your on etc etc.....

I am not saying this is good or even realistic believe just the one that makes the most sense, at least to me.

I suppose it's not that free will is not real but rather its a paradoxical concept. Free will means the ability to make one's own choice but no choice really is your own because nothing exists in vacuum.

You need to be more specific in what "excuse" means.

Sorry, I worded that incorrectly. I guess what I am trying to say that someone who abuses another because of Schizophrenia isn't anymore to people than someone who doesn't have a mental illness and has still abused someone. In both cases we could do what we can to stop the abuse but doesn't mean we are assigning blame to anyone.

  • For once me being lazy actually saved me, right the last line after seeing the post length.

  • what you are describe just sound like habits? An action in response to lack of stimulus is still a habitat. When OP said default action in the post header, I thought that they just didn't realise they are talking about instincts

  • Ask Lemmy @lemmy.world

For people who, like me, believe in Determinism(the Believe that is no True Free will), how do you draw the line for free will.

  • No, I just meant that my sister meant it as a joke, but I thought about it abit more.

Reason why I said electrocuted is cuz that the literal translation from my native language.

But I swear ppl on the internet say electrocuted instead of shock, at least from what I seen.

  • Yeah its not a concerning shock. I put my hand next to my sister when she touched the door and got she too. I am thinking mabye cuz I hairy so a better conductor.

Regardless, I talked mom into seeing an electrical technician about connecting an earth wire to the microwave.

  • I am not entirely sure but i think It happens even if the microwave it off. And i do definitely feel it to the point of pulling my hand right away. Maybe it is a concerning shock.

  • I should probably mention that in my native language there is no word for shock Electrocution is used for both, or rather all three. That the reason for my little sisters comment, its actually a pun as they do say high electricity instead of high energy.

Nevermind, I think I am wrong on that one

  • Bare feet actually and there is one carpet in the house far away from me.

  • But like all the time? no one else in the house is getting electrocuted by microwaves.

  • Ask Lemmy @lemmy.world

Anyone else gets static electrocuted by Microwaves

  • To OP, however you can import your settings from your Lemmy account. Its not gonna your copy posts or comments but blocklists(blacklisted users/communities/instances) and subscriptions.

  • My problem is the opposite. I think I need 2 hours for stuff that needs 15 min

  • Not the place to be talking about this. I swear Lemmy is 99.99999% tech talk. This is probably like 1 of 2 places where this is usually not the case.

  • Does it actually list the packages that are suggested?

Yes, But i think i got what you meant, i tried Manjaro before and when i installed GIMP or VLC(on GUI store), it offered to install Plugins and such(i could choose which to install) for me.

  • Linux @lemmy.ml

How to install recommended packages after installing the app(Linux mint)

  • ppl always bemoan how gluttonous pets are but humans are just as bad. Do you really think that you eat at the exact minute everyday? Or that you eat exactly three meals a day everyday?

  • It’s probably better not to try to preserve webcomics. It’s like the only bad form of art.

That a bizzare take, why? From the sound of it you dont hate comics in general, what about them being on the web makes them "bad"?

Anyways, that honour goes to any podcast by any who calls themeself a comedian.

  • Yeah, its a progressive web-app. It started that way, as web app you can add to your home screen, optimized for touch, long before it was a mobile app.

You could even self-host it, my home instance has its own self-host voyager instance.
