33 years later and much of this is still very relevant. It has dated somewhat, but accurately reflects what I experienced in Singapore during work travel over the past few years.
At the least, if you're interested in what dystopian science fiction writers think about Singapore it certainly dropped some puzzles pieces into place for me.
William Gibson (author of Neuromancer among other things, not all of them good) published an article about Singapore 30 years ago. It's titled Disneyland with the Death Penalty.

Dakota by the Stereophonics is completely different from everything else they made, but gives me a similar reaction. They struck gold with a few for sure, but I think most of their catalogue is actually pretty mediocre.
My experience is totally different. Growing up in Australia in a single-sex school, men cooking or cleaning were laughed at by teenagers, unless it was the barbeque since it's manly. "Get back in the kitchen" jokes and "make me a sandwich" jokes were everywhere and amplified once our classes became co-ed.
The invisibility of toxic masculinity at that age was the most damaging thing. Nobody wanted to be seen as weak, so there was never a chance to understand what being strong truly meant. I think single-sex schools are unfortunately breeding grounds for the manosphere.
I always hated crying , hated feeling emotions, never wanted to be seen as weak emotionally. I'm still suffering the consequences of that environment, as suppressing sadness impacted everything else.
Edit: apologies, did not realise what community this post was in. Did not mean to ignore the rules.
100% agree. I was a Briggs veteran for a long time after the peak. My username (not this one) is in the RecordSmash official post recognising the 1158-player world record. The Daybreak takeover was concerning, but we pushed through.
But realistically I just "accomplished" everything I reasonably could have, and then they took my server away from me. My time with the game ended, but I have no regrets. What a phenomenal experience it was at the time.
Yeah that's fair, I am personally leaning deeper into things like the Echo Mini or soon to be released Echo Nano from their sub brand. I think DAPs are in a weird place, and do wish there was a higher quality iPod-like solution.
Yeah, that's totally fair. I prefer wired listening devices and want less "smart" things in my life. At the moment my music library is about 180GB so a bit much for the smaller available offline devices, and mostly FLAC so the DAC needs to be powerful enough. Absolutely a me problem, as I mentioned in another comment my hobby rabbit hole into audio makes the full decouple very appealing to me.
Yeah I have dabbled with hosted music, but I do mean "offline" device + storage. Like MP3 players of old. I have also been blursed with an interest in audio gear so it becomes a very appealing rabbit hole for me.
Can confirm, lil bro can indeed hear sounds (and since his eyes are pretty bad, it is sometimes like ESP)
