  • Tap: target worker gains Representation

  • I would just keep cashing those checks....

  • Ok, maybe not literally baristas. But my point is that the next generation of experts simply will not exist, because all the entry level jobs are evaporating. All of them. Just ask any group of college graduates with a tech degree about how hard the job market is right now.

  • Yeah, but your calculator does math the same way every time, and doesn't hallucinate wrong answers seemingly at random.

  • It is possible that DeWalt designs and manufactures its own batteries, and there is some clever tech in them that makes them superior to other batteries, or that they pay for high quality components that make them last longer.

However, it is just as likely that they buy the batteries themselves "off the shelf", put them in a custom plastic enclosure, slap their label on them, and sell them for an insane markup. Sometimes, they don't even need the custom enclosure and they just buy someone else's finished battery product. The "off-brand" option may be the exact same product.

It's not unethical to use off-brand batteries, but then if you buy a substandard one that causes a problem the manufacturer may use that as an excuse to deny their warranty claim. But when was the last time you replaced a tool under warranty?

  • Very few people can do such an expansive job covering the earth as Donald Trump....

  • Pretty much the easiest question for a sitting leader to just bullshit through

Right, but he was never a leader. He's a boss. And the type of boss who expects people to just do what he says, without any questions. Simply asking a question is a sign of disloyalty!

  • “The raw output of ChatGPT’s proof was actually quite poor. So it required an expert to kind of sift through and actually understand what it was trying to say,” Lichtman says. But now he and Tao have shortened the proof so that it better distills the LLM’s key insight.

This tracks with what I have seen regarding AI. It looks superficially awesome, but when you start to analyze its output it has a lot of holes that require someone trained in the art to fix. You know, someone with years of experience, and who got that experience without the benefit of AI shortcuts.

What happens 10 or 15 years from now, when all the current crop of experts are retired and all the experts who could have curated the AI output had to spend all that time as baristas instead because the AI took all of their entry level jobs?

  • Here ya go

  • Pope Leo wears the shoes of the fisherman, not the black Florsheim models that Trump insists his underlings wear…

Um Ackshually, traditionally the Pope has worn fancy red leather shoes. Pope Benedict even had his made by a special cobbler in Rome. But Pope Francis decided to wear black shoes instead, which the new Pope also likes.

I bet they are not practical at all for fishing, and probably more expensive than Trump's favorite Florsheims.

  • I'm thinking this guy is just a Civ player, and thinks that if we take Istanbul by force, it will give all of our missionaries +1....

  • I liked the joke, it had some chemistry to it

  • Not true! MAGA has had other important (to them) accomplishments, like harassing brown people and protecting pedophiles.

  • Socialism: If you have two cows, you give one to your neighbor.

Communism: If you have two cows, you give them to the government and the government then gives you some milk.

  • If it's coupled with DC Statehood, why not?

  • Sorry, your AI is hallucinating a bit. No such mechanism exists as you describe it.

However, 2/3 of State legislatures can vote to have a Constitutional Convention for proposing amendments, any one of which would require 3/4 of states to approve in order to come into effect (just like any other amendment). This mechanism was conceived as a way to allow States to enact amendments without Congressional approval.

And before you say "Hey, that's a great idea", know that the batshit crazy Conservatives have been trying to call for one for years, because since everything is done by state, they have a decided advantage. The large states lean Democratic, and the 12 most populous states have more than 50% of the population. That means that the other 38 states could ratify amendments without a majority of the population behind them.

And to make things worse, although it is limited to "amendments", there is nothing preventing a State Convention from ripping the whole thing up and starting over, without any of the nitpicky amendments that the Right hates (like freedom of speech, the press, religion, women voting, etc.), as long as 38 states agree to do it. That would likely prompt the 12 states on the losing end of the deal to attempt to secede rather than submit.

  • Did you see her picture, though? I don't think she is "his type". Totally the wrong demographic

  • It can be anxiety inducing the first time you do anything on your own like that. Rest assured, though, that you are not the only young adult feeling this way. Just do it, make a few mistakes in the process, and then you will be fine. Plus, you will know better next time.

With regards to the passport photo, it's fine, just look at the guidelines thoroughly as they are very specific in terms of your background and stuff. In particular, you're not supposed to use a selfie, because the angle will be all wrong. (You can use a cell phone pic with the proper background and lighting, they just recommend that someone else actually take the picture at the proper angle). Having said that, my last passport pic was a selfie which I took from arms length, and they accepted it....
