    • So they're planting the seeds for the War of the Usurper as far back as Lyonel ?
      • "He's a terrible Maester", "An itchy arsehole is beyond his abilities" , "Begone, Witch!" 🤣🤣🤣
      • Also, I ROFL at "The Fucking Apple Boy!"
      • Speaking of the Apple Boy... hey Apple Boy, you're going to be raising a Dondarrion Bastard...
    • Damn it, Valarr's heartbroken delivery 😭
      • It came off waaaay sadder and less antagonistic than the novella.
    • Sam Spruell’s (Maekar) delivery is incredible.
      • Maekar is broken and wants to hate Dunk, but hates himself so much that it doesn’t even matter.
      • I loved Maekar and Egg's little scene - no words spoken, just superb acting.
    • I'm waiting for S02 to make a final decision on Maekar's change from the Novellas...

    Spoiler Zone

🤣🤣🤣 DUDE, was that a jab at GRRM ?!?!?

I totally misread the subtitles in HBO MAX of "Rowan Fossoway" as "Rohan Fossoway"... and had me thinking they were introducing Lady Webber reaaaally early.

My prediction: The Sworn Sword is smaller than The Hedge Knight, so they're going to spend the first 2 episodes with Maekar/Daeron catching up to Dunk/Egg visiting a recently "Maester-ed" Aemon in Oldtown, Maekar gets to see Dunk in action and ends up giving his signet ring as approval. Then we have the next 4 episodes to deal with Osgrey/Webber.

  • GET UP SER… GET UP!!! … … … because ASX posted!

  • Just found this: https://archiveofourown.org/works/79653671

Finally, David J. Peterson—creator of Dothraki and Valyrian for Game of Thrones—has shared his work on this episode, with the full lyrics and their translation made available. He also comments that he was very pleased with Danny Webb’s performance and pronunciation, allowing for the fact that Ser Arlan’s supposed to be roaring drunk.

  • I was watching the final conversation … on the couch, knees up, bracing myself.

Also i like that they made the fatal blow connected to a father freaking out about his son - adds to the brutality and “accidentality” of it.

Finally, all that singing was … Dothraki - at least according to subtitles ?

AKOTSK S01E05 - In the name of the mother

  • Supposedly it came straight from GRRM…

  • For those who may be unaware,

In an interview released today, Egg's actor Dexter Sol Ansell accidentaly revealed that

Dunk survives the Tragedy of Summerhall.

    Dexter's Spoiler...

  • A Song Of Ice And Fire @lemmy.world

    AKoTSK S1E4 Explained

  • Bit late to the party, but better late than never.

    • Baelor stole the entire episode. His actor is so fuckin' good.
    • Honorary mention to Lyonel, being the standout whenever he shows up.
    • Lmaooo Maekar straight up calling Aerion out for hiding behind the trial of the seven.
    • Fantastic: Armor Design. It is putting HoTD and GOT designs to shame. Honorary mention to that Fossoway armor.
    • Not happy with the fart joke. In the novella, Bracken is the only knight who had the decency to respond to Dunk when asked to join the trial of 7
    • Smallest nitpick, we know the story of every member of Dunk's 6, except for that Beesbury Knight.

IMHO I'm treating the GOT theme being used for Baelor's entrance to the jousting as a surprise/spoiler, allowing others to feel the same goosebumps I experienced.

Additionally, one could argue that this theme serves as a leitmotif for history in the making, i.e.: something being intricately woven into the tapestry of fate.

  • A Song Of Ice And Fire @lemmy.world

    AKoTSK - S01E04 - Seven

  • The line of succession at this point would be

    • Baelor
      • Valar
      • Matarys
    • Aerys
    • Rhaegel
      • Aelor
    • Maekar
      • Daeron
      • Aerion
      • Aemon
      • Aegon

And then anyone else, including women of house Targaryen.

So… a lot of 💩 had to happen for Aerion to have a chance. It really puts into perspective Egg’s Moniker “The Unlikely”

  • … Winds of Winter when ?

Yeah… I’m not going anywhere near that

  • Fossoway’s rant on the Targs was hilarious.

I think Egg was just idealizing “something happening” to Aerion in that moment. IIRC his “kill him! Kill him!” happens before Aerion goes for the horse’s neck.

I wonder if his rage is part of Egg being a bit more “Targy” in the moment… or if Aerion has bullied him, or worse. I don’t recall anything specific right now from the novellas or TWOIAF

  • I guess being the Lord of Summerhall comes with its perks, then. Perhaps Kingsgurds are only dispatched for the main line of the Iron Throne and the branching lines don’t get access that often? Makes sense to me if Markar and his sons are traveling with Baelor/Valar.

I agree with your take on the soldiers not risking that. My theory is that, by seniority, they should obey Aerion over Egg, but Aerion is such an PITA that they wait for a tie breaker from someone who has even more seniority: Maekar or Baelor.

    • This show continues to be everything.
    • Egg's Blackfyre Rebellion song was great.
    • They certainly made Aerion a POS - I was afraid that they would soften him by not being pretty looking as described in the novella.
    • Why would the soldiers take orders from Egg over Aerion?
      • My theory is that the soldiers are not kingguard - so maybe they're assigned to the branch family in Summerfall, and really under Maekar's control... and prob. Maekar would not approve of Aerion's BS...
    • I felt Dunk's betrayal look after the big reveal.
    • Also the music during Egg's reveal was badass.
    • Finally, I really like how they're low-key framing this show as both a sequel to HotD and prequel to Game of Thrones. For us those who know the books and the lore, it's obvious - but for show-only readers it must be a treat.

Ira Parker seems like the most genuine fan of the source material out of the showrunners... so far.

By the way, I think that with the Super Bowl next Sunday, the next episode could be up early, maybe Friday ?

    Spoilers

"All who know you will rejoice in your dying" - That's a bit harsh, but I guess trying to bring back the dragons using fire (and possibly blood) sacrifice will paint you as a villain. That and reforms favoring the common folk.

Also, the fortune teller could be considered a nod the the Ghost of High Heart. Although to be honest, I would had preferred a cryptic prophecy a-la Patchface, vs someone (randomly) showing up and laying it out like in the episode.

Summerhall. The word was fraught with doom.

My Headcannon is that Egg was going to succeed in bringing back Dragons... until Dunk got in the way.

    AKoTSK - S01E03 - The Squire

  • Aegon the Arsonist ("How do you make that fire, Tanselle?")

  • My Observations

    • 🍆
    • Loving these 30 minutes, this episode felt more consistent than the first one.
    • Lyonel continues to be a riot
    • Show, not tell: Egg waiting for the life lesson after Dunk's "Everyone always said I was stupid".
    • I'd rage if I had to stand behind the tallest man in Westeros in a joust...
    • Now I patiently wait for Alt-Shift-X breakdown.
    • They made Maekar a Targaryen version of Stannis, and I'm all here for it.
    • Does Dunk have more than one shield? Confused.

    Blackfyre mention!

I was not a fan of Egg swearing... but seeing Maekar, it makes sense.

  • I have not had a chance to watch the episode yet! I’ll have my breakdown ASAP!

Great first episode! For me the "graphicness" of the GoT theme switcheroo joke didn't land, but THIS was a great first introduction to our heroes. I felt that they were really faithful to the Novella and expanded in the best way possible.

This would totally be a series that I would devour if they dropped the entire thing in one seating a-la Netflix, even more than HoTD.

    Observations

    • Lyonel Baratheon kicked so much ass. I think this show will excel in augmenting the supporting characters.
    • Having Dunk talk to the horses is a great way to translate his inner monologue from the written medium into the visual medium of the series.
    • I didn't know I would appreciate The Antlered DRunk and The Laughin' Storm together.

    Spoiler Zone

I like how they're hinting at the ambiguity of Dunk not being knighted. It is not spelled right away.

I am also glad that there's breadcrumbs about the fan theories from this era sprinkled thru the episode.

I am wondering how are they going to handle The Storm King's Rebellion during Aegon's reign if Daniel Ings is in his 40s
