  • The mistake is not hers. A suspect’s license plate was entered incorrectly—mixing up a zero and the letter O—and her completely valid plate now matches that bad entry in the system.

  • Why do you have both zero and the letter O in your license plates?

  • Why not remove gTLDs altogether? With the exception of country-specific TLDs, they no longer serve a purpose.

Adding all of these worthless extensions that nobody uses just exposes how pointless the whole system is.

  • We have .com but where are .exe and .bat?

  • That's a good suggestion, but unfortunately age verification is not about protecting the kids, it's about removing anonymity from online platforms and making sure that we can't exercise our right to speech online without risking government harassment.

Oh yeah and the advertisers don't want to pay to advertise to bots.

  • Can we go back to Games as a Game?

  • Oh so you're telling me that there's some kind of value provided by paying a human to do a job instead of automating it? You should write an academic paper about this.

  • No.

  • I'm getting pretty tired of seeing these posts every five minutes from the same couple of sites.

Statistics have variance, especially when they're recorded from voluntary surveys, please get over it.

  • This is just FUD. The ruling has nothing to do with federation, and there is no reason why GDPR would prevent content sharing when the user has explicitly agreed to their posts being shared with other servers.

  • They probably work a bit faster than the originals

There are some commands doing string processing that have been rewritten to use SIMD instructions which makes them inherently faster. On the other hand there are other commands where they're performing worse than GNU coreutils: https://www.phoronix.com/news/Ubuntu-Rust-Coreutils-Perf

Over time they will probably close the performance gap for those outliers, but if the GNU coreutils maintainers wanted to accelerate the same commands with SIMD instructions they could also do that. There's no real reason why long-term one should be faster than the other, except for whichever project gets more attention from maintainers.

  • Fantastic and inspiring talk.

  • I don't think it's just about accountability, I think it's also about being able to charge advertisers more for verified-human eyeballs.
